4th Grade Multiplication

October 15th, 2013 (Tuesday)

Content Standards: 4 NBT. 5: Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-

digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models. Objectives/Goals: - Students will use partial products method for multiplying 2 digit factors by 2 digit factors. - Students will recognize errors in multiplication strategies based on place value understanding. They will defend their reasoning with place value language.

Materials Needed: -

Smart Board
Math Journals White Boards and markers (1 per student) Document Camera

Procedures: Have students do Day 1 of their Math Warm Up. Go over each problem with the students using the document camera Have students take their next multiplication-timed test. Once test is complete, have students graph their previous test. To go over homework, instruct students to compare their homework with their elbow buddy. Go over any additional questions students may have on the homework as whole class instruction. Begin lesson with a review of the partial products method. Have students solve in their math journals the problem 6 x 4,342 Ask students to then try and solve 62 x 43 using the partial products method. Give them a few minutes with their elbow buddies to discuss how they think they would solve it. Call on a few pairs to share their solution strategies. Depending on the answers that are given, discussion can go in different directions. Eventually get to the point where you can model to the students how to solve 2 by 2 digit multiplication using the partial products method. Pull up the smart file that has practice problems on it. Go through the first two with the students following along in their math journals. Then hand out white boards and have students practice the last two problems on their own. Circulate throughout the room to check for understanding. Provide more support for those that are struggling.

Once students have practiced on the white boards, instruct students to get with a partner and solve two of the story problems from the smart board. Pull students to the back to work with in a small group that was struggling during independent practice. Conclude lesson by showing a problem on the smart board that shows the partial products method of solution, but has a few errors. Have students respond on a sheet of paper whether or not they think the solution is correct. Have them support their answer using place value language. Once students are finished with their response, they can begin working on their science project.

Assessment: Circulation during independent work on the white boards Collect the students responses for assessment

Differentiation: Students that demonstrate struggle in both classes will be provided with more support by working in a small group with the teacher during partner work. From the first class, students that will definitely need more support are Megan and Antonio. Maisie will also need to be checked in on periodically to ensure that she is completing assignments. From the second class, Gabriela will work with Mrs. Roll during instructional time before she is pulled for CCR intervention. Jordan and Makayla will most likely be pulled to work with teacher during small group work.
