Year 6 Chemical Science

Changes to materials can be reversible, such as melting, freezing, evaporating; or irreversible, such as burning and rusting (ACSSU095) Science as Human Endeavour Testing predictions by gathering data and using evidence to develop explanations of events and phenomena (ACSHE098) Important contributions to the advancement of science have been made by people from a range of cultures (ACSHE099) Scientific understandings, discoveries and inventions are used to solve problems that directly affect peoples lives (ACSHE100) Scientific knowledge is used to inform personal and community decisions (ACSHE220)

Scientific Inquiry Processes Pose questions to clarify practical problems or inform an investigation, predict what the findings might be (ACSIS232) With guidance, select appropriate investigation methods to answer questions or solve problems (ACSIS103) Decide which variable should be changed in fair tests and observe, measure and record data, using digital technologies (ACSIS104) Use equipment and materials safely, identifying potential risks (ACSIS105) Use a range of representations to describe observations, patterns or relationships using digital technologies (ACSIS107) Compare data with predictions and use as evidence in developing explanations (ACSIS221) Suggest improvements to the methods used to investigate a question or solve a problem (ACSIS108) Communicate ideas, explanations and processes in a variety of ways, including multi-modal texts (ACSIS110)

Week 2 Monday 45 mins Pre-assessment Introduction of chemical science KWHL Chart Soluble Insoluble Materials Introduce glossary to refer to (write in books) What happens when materials are mixed? Content focus: Possible outcomes when materials are mixed Activity: Sort into liquid/solid and Crossword Investigation Clean dirty water / Filtration system Fair test Filter stocking, paper funnel, strainer with mesh bottom. Predict the best filtration system Record conclusion and evaluate they can improve the investigation. Week 4 Which materials are soluble in water? Investigate the solubility of a range of common materials in water Students Investigation of some substances are soluble in water, however some substances may appear to dissolve but are actually in suspension. Computer Lesson Discuss The Tyndall Effect scattering of light by particles in a colloid or fine suspension. Read and take notes on matter www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_solution.html Investigation See COO Soluble Insoluble lesson Requires: powdered milk, rubbing alcohol, liquid milk, sugar, oil, salt (6 clear cups of distilled water/6 beakers) Students observe each of the mixtures and separate in 2 grps Those that are solutions and those that are not. Record in journal Ben see if he is allergic to any of the materials above.

Week 3 What is solubility? Introduce students on solutions, solvents and solutes (refer to 1st lesson) Content focus: features of solubility Comprehension Worksheet p, 24

Thursday 90 mins

Investigation The effect of particle sixe and stirring on solubility p. 25 Ice Cube particles (solute, solvents or solutions)

Monday 45 mins Formative assessment

Week 5 What changes to heating and cooling cause? Content focus: How temperature changes affect the molecular structure and bonding of a substance and how this alters the state of the substance. Video on Atoms / Molecules - use the activity described on p. 26. Discuss cooking and the chemical changes that occur ie: white sauce Comprehension Worksheet go through together p, 27-29 Log in to Scootle - L3100 Making water drinkable: mixtures www.scootle.edu.au/ed/objectlink.action?action=content&id=L3100 Investigation Mix a range of materials into hot and cold water to see what the outcomes are. Students predict what chemical reaction will occur and record After their experiment students record the outcomes in their books. Materials: flour, sugar, salt, cordial, oil,

Thursday 90 mins Formative assessment

Week 6 Monday 45 mins Formative assessment Thursday 90 mins Formative assessment Investigation Rusting nails Students will setup an experiment to see if a stronger salt solution will mean that rusting will occur more quickly. They are required to devise an investigation with materials provided. Results will be recorded on Monday Week 7. Why do metals rust? Content focus: Conditions of chemical reactions that cause rusting Activity sheet provided students can work with a partner

Week 7 How is reversible change used in recycling? Content focus: The reversible changes that allow recycling of glass, plastic and paper products. Activity sheet provided, students work with a partner. Record Wk 6s investigation results in your journal (sheet provided) Investigation Research the Recycling Paper sheet with a partner THEN Create paper out of recycled materials Teacher will provide a basic outline - you can be creative in your making of paper. Tidy up the mess once complete Week 9 Summative Assessment Poster that illustrates your understanding of Chemical changes. Rubric will be provided Record understanding on iPad Group activity proof of group and individual work is assessed.

Monday 45 mins

Week 8 Summative Assessment Poster that illustrates your understanding of Chemical changes. Use an iPad / create a poster / or place information on a Powerpoint. Notes and who researched an area needs to be handed up on presentation day. Your could do a fair test or record an experiment on the iPad and record your knowledge and understanding using the rubric as a guide
