2014 Event Information

Directions: Please read the following information for each event of our 2014 competition. Afterwards, please complete the Your Events list. *Note: Each event has a time limit!

Event Name:
Anatomy and Physiology Disease Detectives

Event Information:
To know the human bodys anatomy: integumentary, immune and nervous systems Focuses on epidemiology, which is the study of disease and how they spread. This years topic deals with the Environmental Quality of communities. Know the different insects and their families as well as how they look and the characteristics of each one. Based on genetics and molecular biology, DNA/RNA sequencing, fingerprinting, mutations, etc. Water cycle, rivers, aquatic Insects, how to determine the cleanliness of the water, water pollution, etc. Need to know about the constellations, galaxies, the planets as well as the birth and death stages of a star. Need to know all about glaciers including their where theyre located, how theyre formed and their morphology (classification), geology, deposition, etc. Must be proficient in both reading and constructing topographic, maps, geologic maps, as well as geologic cross sections. Able to infer landslide risk, flood risk, whether a region would experience earthquakes, etc. Students must know basic information of the different groups of rocks and minerals, as well as how they are created and their properties. Competitors build a magnetically levitated car to run to a specified line. Teams must accurately predict the time their car will take, and also take a test that will account for about half of their score. A laboratory event which deals with the various components and properties of direct current (DC) circuits, such as DC circuit concepts and DC circuit analysis (both theory and practice) Requires participants to calculate the IMA (ideal mechanical advantage) and AMA (actual mechanical advantage) of simple machines, as well as efficiency in some cases. Students must have an understanding and familiarity with chemistry equilibrium, and chemical reactions and stoichiometry. You will also be required to do labs during the competition. Involves identification of powders, polymers, fibers, and hair samples, blood serum and fingerprint analysis, and interpretation of chromatography. Given a scenario and possible suspects, students will perform a series of tests that will be used to solve a crime.

Write to Do It

Tests knowledge of the properties and characteristics of metals, ceramics, polymers and composite materials, with a focus on material characterization techniques, intermolecular forces, and surface chemistry. Teams must design, test, build, and document a Rube Goldberg- like device that completes a required Final Task using a sequence of consecutive Energy Transfers. Build a device to hold a specified weight a given distance from a vertical surface. Include a maximum vertical height for the device, how far the device must hold the weight from the vertical surface, the max weight, and the mode of attaching the device to the wall. Teams design and build a device that transports a Large Grade A uncooked egg a distance of 8 to 12 meters along a straight track as fast as possible. The device should stop as close to the wall, without hitting it and going as straight as possible. A building event consisting of two parts: a glider made to be launched by the pulling and releasing of a rubber loop and a flight log similar to that of other aviation events. You will be given several materials and asked to perform an experiment on a certain science topic, then you will write-up the experiment in the "lab write-up," which will be used to score you. The heights for the two drops can be three or seven meters, either the same heights or two different heights. The heights and weights will be announced competition day. The weights can be from 50 to 300 grams. The goal is to get your device to drop as close as possible to the floor below, without touching. Involves the gathering and processing of data to solve some sort of mathematical analysis. Students must have a very wide base of math and science knowledge. One team member is given a structure, which is already built, and writes a set of instructions on how to build it. The other team member will receive the instructions written by their teammate and attempt to recreate the object as accurately as possible.

Your Event Choices

Directions: Please label each event with a score from 1 to 23: 1 being the event you want to do the most and 23 being the least. Then in the box provided, write out any and all science classes you are taking or have taken in high school. Thank you.
