The Boston Tea Party Podcast Today you will listen to a podcast about The Boston Tea Party.

During this time, you will hear about things that happened as a result of people not being happy. Have you ever been so fearful of something, you tried to steer clear of it, or even avoid it? I know I sure have! So did the American people in _____. Going back in that time, America was made of only ___ colonies, but these colonies were controlled by the British Empire (also known as the Parliament). Parliament is a group of people who are in charge of making the laws and rules for the people they represent. This control was due to first settlers being from the British Empire. Soldiers were sent over to America in order to ensure rules from Parliament were being followed. The first disagreement started when the British declared they were going to pass the ________ Act; which raised taxes of goods such as coffee, indigo, and wine. The taxation was in hopes to help the British government prosper financially. This new tax made the American colonists ________ because they had no one in Parliament representing them, so they declared it wasnt fair. Just one year later, Parliament decided that more money was needed, so they soon enforced a Stamp Act. This was the first tax imposed on American-made goods. Orders were made for newspapers, pamphlets, and other important documents to have official seals or _______ added to all printed materials. Colonists were enraged because what once had been free to citizens, were now forced to pay not to help regulate commerce, but raise money for the government so they could afford to pay the British soldiers that were in America. Colonists met secretly, trying to get stamp agents to quit their jobs, but since that was not working, they decided to reduce their buying of English goods in protest of the new tax. Because we had vocal colonists, the Stamp Act was revoked the next year, but other taxes and

policies were put in to take its place. Acts, such as the Townshend Act, put taxes on glass, lead, paper and such, causing colonies to _______ buying English goods. In order to protect tax officials, English troops came to Boston in 1768. One afternoon, colonists lashed out against the soldiers, calling them names such as lobsters and bloody backs, criticizing their _____ uniforms. In retaliation, soldiers fired their guns killing four men and one boy. This became known as the famous Boston _________. English merchants began losing money because colonists wouldnt buy goods. As a result, Parliament lifted the Townshend Acts, except the tax on tea. Still leaving the people upset, most decided to start buying English goods again, but some protested still by purchasing smuggled tea from Holland. Unsold tea began to sit, making the British East India Company in danger of bankruptcy. In efforts to help their business, the company lifted its tax on tea, _____________ the price of tea once in reached America. By August, selected tea agents were sent to New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and South Carolina from the British East India Company to sell imported, TAXED tea to the colonists. Since Parliament had made the decision about selected tea sellers, this made colonists believe other merchants could be in danger. NY and Philadelphia chose to resign, but Bostons leaders had to make a decision quick. Among these officials were Sam Adams, John Hancock and Paul Revere. The Long Room Club met that night and decided again the tea as well, also publishing in the towns Gazette the companys plan to destroy their happiness. Notices were written for agents to resign, re-board their ships, and head back to London. Five ________ colonists waited for the agents to resign, but when there was no sign of them, search parties went out to find them. Ships in Philadelphia, NY, and SC resigned, but the ships in Boston were ordered to ____ leave

without their payment of taxes. The ships carrying the tea in the harbor would be assisted by British warships and troops, if needed. Colonists met once again, deciding as a group if the tea had not left by the 16th, the colonists would ________ it. When the 16th of December came, efforts by the ship were made to exit, but since their cargo had not been unloaded they were denied. Colonists began to disguise themselves using old clothes, Indian blankets, covering their faces with grease and soot. They hoped many would think they were American ________ instead of the carpenters, blacksmiths, and other apprentices they actually were. That evening, while in the Old South Meeting House, Indians appeared and declared a tea party. Once colonists had marched to the harbor, Indians and men both boarded the three ships and began to _______ the tea chests. Getting through the _____ chests of tea was the easy part but the tea itself was wrapped with canvas that had to be demolished with hatchets. Low tide also caused for the tea being thrown overboard to stack up around __ feet deep. And that is, as we know it, The Boston Tea Party.
