Welcome Back!

Homework
Please turn in your information cards.
If it does not have your picture on it, I will not accept it.

Please give me the Class Profile paper from last week. Hold up your Oral English notebooks!

Seats!
The seats you sit in today will be the seats you sit in for the rest of the semester. This is how I will check attendance.

Names!
You should all have your English names and know how to say them. Everyone should take turns telling me your English name, if you have a question about how to pronounce it, let me know.

Pronunciation
Today we are going to talk about Syllables

What is a Syllable? What does stressed mean? Unstressed?

Syllable A syllable is a part of a word.

Each syllable has a vowel sound.

Syllables For example: Cheese has one syllable Pizza has two syllables (pizza) Cheese Burger has ? syllables
(cheese burger)

Syllables
In English words with more than one syllable, one syllable is stressed, or stronger. The stressed syllable sounds louder and s l o w e r.

Syllables
Some English words with two syllables have stress on the second syllable:
re peat

But most English words, especially nouns, with two syllables have stress on the first syllable:
piz za

Syllables Listen and repeat. The stressed syllables are in bold.

pizza repeat

Syllables
Write down these words and underline the stressed syllable in each word: Pizza Repeat Coffee People Season Ready

Vocabulary
Turn to page 4 in your books. We are going to listen to some vocabulary. Notice that the part of the word that is underlined is the stressed syllable.

Assessments
I will grade you on:
Being prepared to answer (you should not need much time to think) Pronunciation (focusing on syllables and stress which we have gone over) Length of answers (the questions I ask will not have a one word answer, be sure to speak long enough) Remember, I could ask ANYONE next week. So it is important to be prepared.

Office Hours
I will have office hours on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm in the Bridge Caf (Peter Hall Lobby) If you plan on coming, please send me a message letting me know.

Questions?
Are there any questions about anything we have talked about today?
