Prompt for ED 201 Lesson Self-Assessment Name: Dionetta Piazzo Lesson Topic: Hair brush design Date Observed:

School/Grade Level/Number of Students Taught: Fairview Charter/ 8th/ 29 Cooperating Teacher Name: Mr. Floyd Planning and Preparation:
How did your lesson design reflect what actually happened in the lesson? What did/would you have changed? Were you able to teach the lesson in the allotted time? Why or why not? Were your lesson objectives clearly stated and describe what your students actually learned? My lesson design went over designing an innovative hair brush with student interaction. And that actually happened during the lesson too. I would have changed the group size for the lesson. I did teach the lesson in the allotted time. I feel my lesson objectives were clearly stated and are what I taught. Learning Environment: How did you encourage student participation and elicit responses from all students? What strategies did you use to manage and monitor student behavior? How did you engage them in responding to you and each other? I asked students a few questions to encourage student participation and elicit responses. Once the students were broke into groups I walked around to make sure they stayed on track. I asked groups what innovation they decided on, how it would fit on the hair brush, is it water resistant, etc. I feel this engaged the students with me and each other. It had them thinking more and discussing their innovation further.

Classroom Instruction: What strategies and/or procedures did you use to assist students in learning the lesson content? How effective were those strategies/procedures in helping students learn? What changes or adjustments did you need to make during the lesson? I used a SMART board to assist me in my lesson and I also brought in samples of hair brushes. The hair brushes were good for the students to see the different styles. They were able to hold them, pull them apart, and see all parts. The SMART board wasnt working correctly so I need assistance and had to manually move slides instead of using the touch screen. Assessment: How did you know if the students learned what you taught them? What did you learn from listening to student responses, examining their work or observing their interactions? How well did your assessments connect to the lesson objectives? I checked in with the students progress while they were in their groups sketching and also while they were working on the computers. I learned that they students have great imaginations. They all came up with really great ideas. They understood aspects of a brush and their computer program that I didnt know existed. My assessment was right on target for my lesson objectives.

Professional Responsibilities: How did you seek feedback from your cooperating teacher? What did you learn from his/her feedback and how did you apply it to your lesson? I asked many questions and my cooperating teacher expressed that it was my lesson so I should do what I wanted. He gave me a guideline to follow and I did the rest. I had free reign according to him and I did what I could with it. It wasnt easy but it was a learning experience. Reflection: What did you learn about teaching, student learning and assessing from this lesson? How would you use what you learned for future instructional experiences? Based on this lesson, what Wisconsin Teaching Standard represents your area of greatest growth this semester? What standard represents an area of further development for you? Why? I learned that teaching is not as easy as it looks. Designing a lesson took longer than I thought it would. Also teaching the lesson wasnt what I thought it would be. I realized its harder teaching somebody elses class. I didnt have the background of the students which was difficult. I learned that students learn differently at different ages. During students middle school years they work best with hands on projects instead of longer lectures. Assessing lessons wasnt as bad as I had anticipated because of informal and formal assessments. I feel my greatest growth this semester was in teachers know how to teach. I used the SMART board to help the students and myself use technology. It is interactive. I can ask a question and write their responses on the board for them to see. I would work on Teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons. I am still developing different forms of delivery methods. I would like to not have to use a step by step method and work more off the cuff. I feel this will come with time and experience.
