Walker Angel Walker 10/05/2013 Module 2 Assignment

In reading the textbook Learning & Teaching Research-Based Methods by Don Kauchak and Paul Eggen I learned a numerous amount of teaching methods through chapters 4, 5 and 6. I also learned new concepts through competencies 3, 4, and 8. In chapter 4 what I took away from it was the importance of an integrated curriculum. In chapter 5 I learned the importance of time sequences into activities. Lastly in chapter 6 I took away the importance of making clear learning objectives. Through these chapters I gained a ton of information on what it takes to not only become a productive teacher, but an organized one as well. In chapter 4 I learned a lot about an integrated curriculum. An integrated curriculum includes interdisciplinary planning, it is discipline based, and integrated. Interdisciplinary planning includes creating units so more than one subject matter can be covered by one main theme. So for instance my theme could be Snow. I could incorporate in the lessons the history of the first snowfall, which covers the social studies aspect, an educational book on winter and have the class cut out their own snowflakes, which covers language arts, and it shows diversity because not all snowflakes are the same. I could also do a science lesson on how cold does it has to be for it to snow. The chapter also outlined the importance of an integrated approach. In this the teacher should relate the topic to real-life situations. That way the students will have something to relate to, and can implement them in daily routines. We must also use disciplines as tools to

Walker help the students understand the problems being presented. I believe competency 4 will go with this chapter because it states learning processes and factors that impact student

learning. This means that having an integrated curriculum could help the students relate subject matters together. Making a less favorable subject, a more enjoyable one. In chapter 5 I learned the importance of time involved into activities. In the chapter it explained what allocated time is, which is the amount of time a teacher should spend on certain content areas. Instructional time gives the teacher time to explain activities being done in that subject area. We also have academic time that is explained as the time for students to involved in the learning activities. We must also give the students time to engaged during the activities. As teachers we must allow time for all these steps that way we can explain what is being done, model it, and we should also give the students time to engaged, and learn from the activities. Competency 8 would fit well with this chapter because it states Appropriate instructional techniques and strategies that actively engaged students in the learning process. In this chapter we talked about giving the students engaged time with one another to do learning activities. It will help with the learning process by helping student remember information being presented to them by another talking about it to them. Chapter 6 was the most important for me because it outlined the importance of making clear learning objectives. We must make sure we are aware of the TEKS, and is the activities being presented follow DAP. Another thing we must make sure we do is making sure the students can understand what they are supposed to learn. Depends on what age group we are working with. We should use vocabulary they could understand, and identify. This chapter also follows competency 3, which states instructional design,

Walker delivery, and assessment aligned with the Texas statewide assessment program. I believe this goes with this because; learning objectives are the start of everything. We want our students on track with the Texas assessment program. It all starts with the teachers delivery of the material being presented, and how the teacher designs it. Furthermore I took away a lot of techniques about time management, integrated

curriculum, and the importance of making clear objectives. With using these techniques it will help me become a better teacher, role model, and well rounded.
