Session 7

What is needed to create a closed polygon?

Learning Goal: To create a closed shape by turning.

Success Criteria - I can calculate the turn to create a shape. - I can explain and record the process to make a closed shape. - I can identify the angles used to create my shape. -

Create percentage web based on a whole number (e.g. 30). Model how to get 10%, using place value chart. Once they understand 10% of 30 is 3, model how to get 20%, 30%, 5%. If you know 10% and 5%, what is 15%? Have students choose to do a percentage web for $60, $48 or $29.95. Allocate $60 problem to lower students (e.g. Mario, Aleesha, Sam, Lachlan, Rikki, etc.)

Set context Make me an equilateral hexagon.

Using Mad logo make:

Hexagon Equilateral Triangle Square

Roving questions: - Why are the shapes working/not working?

How many degrees are there in a circle? How does knowing this help you with making your shape?

What is needed to create a closed equilateral polygon? - Congruent sides - Angles/turn the same - Outside angle/turns add up to 360

Record instructions to successfully completing a closed shape and design.

Session 8 - How to use protractors

Worded problems using percentage Include numbers beyond 100, non zero/5 2 digit numbers and numbers to the 2nd decimal place.

Go through interactive protractor website: http://www.mathsisfun.com/geomet ry/protractor-using.html

PRE TEST: Estimate and then measure the angles on the worksheet.

24 students in a class took an algebra test . If 18 students passed the test, what percent do not pass? Chris's Burgers cooks its burgers either well done or medium. Last night the restaurant served 96 burgers in all, 72 of which were well done. What percentage of the burgers were well done? See more at: http://au.ixl.com/math/year6/find-what-percent-onenumber-is-of-another-wordproblems#sthash.nAees4TU. dpuf

-What benchmarks can you use to make reasonable estimates? -How will you know you are reading the correct value on the protractor?

Session 9

I want to buy a new laptop. There is a sale on at the moment for 30% off. The laptop I want costs $600 How much will the laptop cost?

Go through interactive protractor website: http://www.mathsisfun.com/geomet ry/protractor-using.html or Define acute: smaller then 90 obtuse: larger thean 90 but smaller than 180 Reflex: larger than 180

Using iPads, take photos of 2 x acute, obtuse, straight line and reflex angles. Print photos and measure them.

What is the definition of an acute, obtuse, straight line and reflex angle? How will you measure a reflex angle? (Eg. Measure inside angle 180)? When you are measuring an angle, what do you have to think about what part of your protractor lines up with what part of the angle? Why does knowing how to measure angles help in the real world?

Final prsim and pyramid Assessment of measuring angles worksheet

Session 10

A videogame costs $37.99 and there is an offer for 40% off. How much does the game cost? If 15 people out of 90 take this offer, what percentage do not?

Go through interactive protractor website: http://www.mathplayground.com/m easuringangles.html Highlight how the protractor needs to be aligned to properly measure an angle.

Using photos taken of angles around the school, have students mark in which part of the angle they are measuring, and accurately measure the angle with a protractor.
