U n i t 2 T h e M o l e C o n c e p t

Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure spoon: 1.994g B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. Pour a teaspoon of aluminum powder in the teaspoon and find the mass. Switch from g into mol and into atoms Al. B. Mass of aluminum powder: 6.862g 1.994g = 4.868g C. 4.868g Al * 1mol Al / 26.98g Al * 6.02*10^23 Al / 1mol Al = 1.086*10^23 atoms Al

Concluding Statement: There are 1.086*10^23 atoms Al present in 1 teaspoon of aluminum powder. 2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. Pour a teaspoon of iron powder in the teaspoon and find the mass. Then switch from g into mols Fe. This number in mols will equal 1 level teaspoon of Fe powder. Then you can do proportions. 1.00mol Fe powder / x level teaspoons = the number you just got / 1 level teaspoon Fe (more specific steps will be shown in c). Solve for x to find level teaspoons of iron in 1.00 mol of iron powder. B. Mass of iron powder: 12.527g-1.994 = 10.533g C. 10.533g Fe * 1 mol Fe / 55.85g Fe = 0.18859mol Fe 0.18859 mol Fe = 1 level teaspoon of Fe 1 mol Fe / x level teaspoons = 0.18859 mol Fe / 1 level teaspoon Fe 1 = 0.18859x x = 5.30 level teaspoons Fe

Concluding Statement: 5.30 level teaspoons Fe are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder. 3. Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. Find the length, width and the mass of a strip of zinc metal. Convert the mass into moles then into atoms. Find the area of the piece of Zinc metal. The number of atoms you just found is the number of atoms in the area of the piece of Zinc metal. Do proportions. The area of the piece of Zinc metal strip that you just found / the number of atoms of the piece of zinc metal strip = area of the piece of zinc metal strip given / x atoms in the given Zinc metal strip. Solve for x.

B. Length of zinc metal strip: 10.52cm, width of zinc metal strip: 1.48cm, mass of zinc metal strip: 1.718g 1.718g Zn * 1mol Zn/ 65.38g Zn * 6.02*10^23 atoms Zn / 1 mol Zn = 1.582 *10^22 atoms Zn Area of zinc metal strip: 10.52cm * 1.48cm = 15.6cm2 15.6cm2 Zn / 1.582 *10^22 atoms Zn = 2.00cm2 Zn / x atoms Zn 15.6x = 1.582*10^22 atoms Zn * 2.00 cm2 x=2.03*10^21 atoms Zn Concluding Statement: There are 2.03*10^21 atoms Zn in a 2.00cm2 piece of zinc metal. Assuming that baby oil is C23H48, Determine the volume of baby oil that would provide 6.00 x 10^22 molecules of oil A. Find the mass of 1 teaspoon of C23H48. Convert the given molecules of oil to moles then to grams. Since g= cm^3, you will get the volume. B. Mass of baby oil: 2.855g-1.994g= 0.861g C. 6.00 x 1022 molecules C23H48 * 1mol C23H48 / 6.02*10^23 molecules C23H48 * 324.71g C23H48 / 1mol C23H48 * 1cm3 C23H48 / 1g C23H48 = 32.4 cm3 C23H48 4.

Concluding Statement: The volume of 6.00*10^22 molecules of C23H48 is 32.4 cm3. 5. Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper. A. First find the mass and length of a copper wire. Convert the g into moles. Do proportions: moles of the copper wire that you have/ the length of copper wire = given moles of copper wire / x cm, length of the copper wire which has 2.00 moles

B. Copper wire: 10.15cm, 1.877g C. 1.877g Cu * 1 mol Cu / 63.55g Cu = 0.0295mol Cu 0.0295 mol Cu / 10.15cm = 2.00mol Cu / x cm 10.15*2.00 = 0.0295x x= 687cm

Concluding Statement: 687cm of copper wire is needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper. 6. Determine the volume of sugar (C12H22O11) needed to provide 3.59 x 1023 atoms . A. Determine the volume of C12H22O11. It is also the mass because 1 cm3 = 1 g. Convert the mass into molecules C12H22O11. Then do proportions. The volume of the sugar cube that you have / the molecules in the sugar which you just found = the given molecules of sugar / volume of the given sugar, x. Solve for x. B. L: 1.81cm. W: 1.93cm. H: 1.11cm. Volume=3.88cm^3=3.88g C. 3.88g C12H22O11 * 1 mol C12H22O11 / 342.34g C12H22O11 * 6.02*1023 / 1 mol C12H22O11 = 6.82*1021 molecules C12H22O11 3.88 cm3 C12H22O11 / 6.82*1021 molecules C12H22O11 = x cm3 / 3.59*1023 molecules 3.88 * 3.59*1023 = (6.82*1021) x

x = 204 cm3

Concluding Statement: 204 cm3 of C12H22O11 is needed to provide 3.59 x 1023 atoms. Pictures
