Pedagogical comments: Technology Integration: Using Video Playback to develop 21st century skills Developing 21st century skills

As explained by Mohsen, 2008, In the field of physical education, one can foresee technology using virtual reality to help students learn motor skills in physical education or even holograms and robots as personal trainers to students. The possibility of using technology where students work collaboratively on problem solving while using holograms is only a season away. I would like to say that I/We are there yet, but until then I want to focus on something that can be introduced today! Therefore, when I think about a personal technology goal for introducing a new collaborative tool for my students, the first few things that I have to think about are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Does it enhance student learning? Does it effectively facilitate communication and interaction between students? Is it user friendly? How easy is it to teach students to use it? Does it encourage participation? Finally, is it better than what I have been using today?

These are important questions to ask and these questions have an even more critical significance when referring to Kindergarten students. These students have some ability to effectively use the computer, but not all students are capable of handling programs the same way. Therefore when considering a personal goal, I have to be cognizant of my students diverse abilities with using technology. I need to adopt technology that will be universally easy for all my students to use. For my thesis with Boston University, I am studying and researching the impact of video playback as an effective tool to enhance student learning. I have already started using video to engage students in self-assessment and peer assessments. These

My goal is to use video playback as a tool to develop these 21st century skills, enhance their learning, and equip them to be effective learners in this 21st century. There are a few pivotal quotes that cement the rationale of my goal to enhance student learning. These are a few of these quotes listed below: 1. As stated by Greenstein, L (2010), a meta- analysis by Sebba and colleagues

(2008) confirmed that peer and self assessment have a positive effect on learning across content areas and that students who engage in it show greater engagement in learning and increased independent learning. They are more aware of goals and objectives and have a better understanding of what they have to do to succeed.(p.115) 2. As stated by Frey, N; Fisher, D; Gonsalez, A. (2010), A literacy 2.0 curriculum

teaches decision making by ensuring that students have lots of opportunities to think critically and then act upon their choices. (p.50) Even as I wanted to come up with a strategy to enhance student learning I decided to combine the effective use of self and peer assessment as stated in point 1 with students using their critical thinking skills as stated in point 2 to impact student learning. I have used Voki and Audacity in Grade 4 with one student but it has never been used to enhance student collaboration. At the grade 4 level I can very easily see how we can use Video playback technology along with Google docs for students to engage in

Pedagogical comments: Technology Integration: Using Video Playback to develop 21st century skills collaborative learning (sharing ideas, self assessing and peer assessing work, group projects etc) which they are not doing in a Phys. Ed. setting as of today. I want to think at the Kindergarten level, which I believe has more limitations as far as with what we use and how we use it. At the start of my proposal I mentioned that while introducing technology one should consider its users, it should be user friendly, easy to use and easy to teach as well. I want to use VOKI and Audacity, in conjunction with visual learning tools (video playback technology) to enhance student learning. I want to use Video playback technology, which will include the use of software like VoiceThread, which will create a platform for students to share ideas (engage in collaborative learning). I also want to explore the use of VOKI- (text to voice option), to allow students to understand what the expectations are (they dont have to be able to read the questions- they just hit play and the question/expectations are read out to them at the tempo, language and accent that they understand), and Audacity will allow them to document their thoughts and ideas vocally. At their age, being able to effectively communicate their ideas through written pieces is a difficult task. It does not create an environment for students to effectively document their thoughts and ideas. Audacity will allow students to document their thoughts, which can be revisited, especially when students are working on group projects. This software can enable teachers to note what each individuals thoughts on a topic were, as well as allow students to revisit their interactions to further engage in collaborative learning experiences. I also see use of this technology tool especially when students are working in small groups- as a teacher I will not able to be a part of all students groups and hear all of their comments, but Audacity allows documentation of their collaborative efforts. This also helps teachers in revisiting

These strategies aim at developing in students their collaborative skills, communication skills, critical and thinking skills, as well as the continued process of effective use of video playback, Voki and Audacity as collaborative learning tools. A sidekick goal is to use Voki to develop an effective teacher learning communities. As I researched the site I found that there are no Voki lesson plans for Physical Education at the Kindergarten level. One way to build this network is to start populating Voki with lesson plans that other teachers can feed off and then encourage participation, thereby building an effective learning community of teachers that work together to impact and enhance student learning.
