LESSON IDEA: WEBSITE-CREATION TOOLS Name: Rachel Benhart Directions: Using the template below, describe how students

could use a blog, wiki, or other websitecreation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi. Grade Level: Fifth Grade Content Area: Language Arts- Writing Technology Used (check all that apply): *** Blog *** Wiki Other Website Creation Tool (list):

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: ELACC5W2 Text Types and Purposes: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly. ELACC5W1 Text Types and Purposes: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. Brief Description of Learning Experience: What learning standards will be addressed? What will students and teachers do? What products will students create? How will the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the product(s) students are creating? How broad is this audience? Students will view an example of an opinion paper and an imformative paper and then decide on a topic to write about. The paper must be either opinion or informative. Once the papers are completed, the students will exchange their papers with a peer in the class in order for the papers to be revised. Once all revisions are completed, the students will publish their papers to either a wiki page or the class blog, depending on which type of paper it is. All opinion papers will be published to the class blog and all informative papers will be published to a wiki page. Blooms Level of Critical Thinking Required (check all that apply): See http://epltt.coe.uga.edu/index.php?title=Bloom%27s_Taxonomy Remembering *** Understanding *** Applying Analyzing Evaluating ***Creating Student Engagement: Which indicators of Engaged Learning area strong and why? (See Engaged Learning and Authenticity handouts distributed earlier this semester.) Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): What LoTi would this lesson be and Why?(See Engaged Learning handout distributed earlier this semester.) The level of technology reached in this lesson would be the fifth level of technology because the students will be creating their own work and will publish it on their very own wiki page. Importance of technology: Why is using a website-creation tool critical to the project? Could the project be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience? The importance of the website creation tool is for the students to be able to publish their own writing pieces. If that were not a part of the assignment, then it would defiet the whole purpose in my opinion. The students need ot feel the accomplishement of having their work published, especially with the assignment. They have to write either an opinion piece or an imformative piece and what better way is there for people to see these pieces other then publishing them online?

LESSON IDEA: WEBSITE-CREATION TOOLS Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding Internet safety and student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how you would (1) minimize risks to students/yourself; (2) alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and (3) follow common Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies. Since each paper will be submitted online, I will have the students either use a fake name in order to publish it or not submit name with it at all. Students will only have access to the wiki page in class to submit the assignment and afterwards, only the teacher will have access. The blog papers will be published by the teacher with no name or a pretend name as well. Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. What are you trying that you have not tried before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn? I am hoping to see how much technical knowledge my students actually have and for those that do not know about the use of tchnology, I am hoping that this will further their knowledge and help them in the longrun because I know that wiki pages are used across the board in all age groups.
