Vocal Apprenticeship Program Choral Ensembles 2013 2014 Chorus Handbook

2
INTRODUCTION The Handel and Haydn Societys Educational Outreach Program is praised by educators, musicians, parents, and students for its ability to involve children in music-making in meaningful, enjoyable, and lasting ways. Now in its 26th year, the program offers public school students opportunities to hear and perform classical music, and gives them a sense of the many ways in which music can become a part of our everyday lives. Workshops, recitals, and youth concerts are offered free of charge each year in Boston, Brockton, Cambridge, Lawrence, Lowell, Lynn, Medford, Quincy, and Woburn. The Vocal Apprenticeship Program (grades 3-12) is one of the Societys most important educational initiatives, addressing the needs of a special group of talented urban and suburban youngsters, those for whom the study of music can outline a path towards higher education and a career in music VAP Choral Program The choral program is comprised of five auditions vocal ensembles Singers: childrens chorus for students in grades 3-5 Youth Chorus: intermediate level choir for students in grades 6-8 Young Mens Chorus: changing and changed male voices in grades 8-12 Young Womens Chorus: high school women in grades 9-12 Le Soliste: advanced level womens chamber choir for qualifying members of the Young Womens Chorus VAP SOLOISTS PROGRAM Students in the VAP High School Soloists program receive instruction in voice and diction, participate in master classes at the New England Conservatory, and perform in solo recitals twice a year. In addition, VAP soloists sing in with the Young Mens or Young Womens Chorus. The program is designed for high school musicians with significant potential to major in music, and who have financial need. All students are assigned to, and required to take a musicianship class. The musicianship program is integral to the success of all students. It is in the musicianship program focuses on the sequential development of music literacy, through students learn and apply essential skills and concepts, such as sight-singing, aural skills, music theory, and music history. All VAP choral students and soloists are expected to participate in their schools music program, unless the school does not offer a program. In 2013-2014, the Vocal Apprenticeship Program will serve over 200 young musicians from 45 Massachusetts communities. Students and their families are also invited to select concerts at Symphony Hall throughout the season. Choral auditions are held in May, January and September of each year. VAP Soloist auditions are held in June for September entrance.

ATTENDANCE Attendance is required at all chorus rehearsals and musicianship classes. To report an absence, please contact your childs ensemble conductor and/or musicianship teacher directly (see the Contact Information section). Please do not report absences to Heather Fishman or Bill Pappazisis. Students are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences per semester from rehearsals and/or musicianship classes, regardless of reason for the absence. In the event a students planned absence from rehearsal or musicianship class is necessary (other than illness or family emergency) his/her ensemble conductor must be notified of the planned absence in writing, at least TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE. SAT testing, a school concert, and an important family event are examples of activities that may necessitate a planned absence from a rehearsal. Unplanned absences due to illness or emergency must be reported directly to the ensemble conductor and/or musicianship teacher as soon as possible, and prior to the beginning of rehearsal or class. His/her contact information can be found on p.5 of this handbook. Please be aware that student a student who is absent more than three (3) times from a rehearsal or musicianship class jeopardizes his/her continued participation in the program, and jeopardizes continued financial aid. Attendance at all dress rehearsals and all scheduled performances is mandatory, and absences are not permitted. On occasion, an ensemble director may designate additional mandatory rehearsals. Dates for those rehearsals will be published at the beginning of the semester.
