The project for this chapter will be an Ofrenda modeled after the Mexican custom of celebrating the Day

of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), in which people construct an altar of memories about a deceased loved one. It is a celebration blending the Catholic holy days of All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2) with the indigenous religious practices common before the advent of the Spanish Conquistadores. You will 1. Choose a person to commemorate. It may be a deceased relative, an historic figure, a character from fiction, or a pop culture icon. (of Spanish background unless it is a relative). 2. Construct a memory altar. It must include a picture of the person, a gift that your person would appreciate, and 4 items representing the elements of earth, water, wind, and fire. The altar should be no larger than a shoe box. The altar should be colorful, original, and neatly done for the full 15 points. 3. Write about the person and tell us what the person was like and the person did in their lifetime. Try to link these events with the items you choose for your ofrenda. Use adverbial expressions such as Una vez, A la edad de 15 aos, el ao pasado 15 points 4. Present your ofrenda to the class in Spanish. Tell what your 4 items and gift are and how they relate to your character. You need to speak in complete, correct Spanish sentences to earn full 15 points. This project, worth 45 pts. is due Thursday, October 31, 2013 No late work will be accepted.
