Philosophy 105 Note 1 (Day 1) Socrates (399 BC) : was executed. Philosophia means love (lack) and wisdom.

nd wisdom. Philosophia opposed (dont believe) dogmastism (I already know everything, I dont need philosophy). People who have dogmatism are very arrogant. Philosophers believe that all of ideas need to be based on reason (logos). Dogmatists dont believe any reason for their belief. Dogmatists tend to believe in authority for their beliefs. (I just believe it because my parents believe it, so I have no reason for my belief.) Philosophers have questions. Most human beings dont like to have questions about their beliefs. Dogmatism has orthodoxy. Set up beliefs that must not be questions. Every society has orthodoxy. One of the most important orthodoxy beliefs is equality. Modern: last 500 years phil. Now, we believe that everybody is equal Ancient philosophers believe hierarchy. Hierarchy is based on whether human beings have wisdom or not. Hierarchy is inequality. Ancient philosophers such as Socrates believe that some human beings are better than others. Medieval is between ancient and modern. Medieval traditional philosophy is hugely based on Christianity (catholic) and ancient philosophy. Some human beings are better than others. Moderns believe that everybody can be wised
