Astronomy Unit Notes E1 Explain day and night, the length of the year, and seasons.

Explain using diagrams, models, and/or animations that as the Earth rotates, any place on its surface will sometimes face the Sun day time and other times face away towards dark space night time.

Explain using diagrams, models, and/or animations the cause and length of the Earths year. Explain using diagrams, models, and/or animations how the tilt of the Earth affects its seasons.

Day and night are caused by the Earths rotation. Seasons are caused by the Earths tilt on its axis, NOT by the Earth being farther from the sun during certain times of the year. 1 year is the amount of time it takes for the Earth to revolve around the sun.

Astronomy Unit Notes E2 Explain why the moon has phases.

Recognize that the phases of the Moon are due to its position in relation to the Sun and the Earth. Use diagrams, models, and/or animations to explain the phases of the moon.

The Moon: The moon is a natural satellite Many other planets also have 1 or more moons The moon does not have its own light. The moon appears bright because sunlight reflects off it. Phases of the moon are from the Earths shadow The moon causes Ocean tides.

Astronomy Unit Notes E3 Outline at least three uses of artificial satellites, including for communication, observation and navigation.

Research the use of artificial satellites such as: television and internet, weather monitoring, astronomy, atmospheric studies, reconnaissance, mapping/navigation, remote sensing, search and rescue etc. Uses of Satellites: Weather Space Exploration Search and rescue Navigation Communication Reconnaissance

Weather Satellites: Weather Satellites can monitor temperatures on earth to give weather reports. Space Exploration: Scientists can see into space better from telescopes on satellites Search and Rescue: Satellites can take images of the Earth to find people in trouble. Navigation: Satellites send signals to navigation systems to find our location and give directions. Communication: TV, internet, and phone signals are often sent using satellites. Reconnaissance: Reconnaissance satellites are used to spy on other countries.

E4 Outline features of the Earths atmosphere, including ozone layer and greenhouse gases

State the functions of the ozone layer in shielding Earth from UV light and greenhouse gases in maintaining temperatures on Earth. The ozone layer protects us from the sun. Greenhouse gases trap heat inside the ozone the layer, causing global warming. The ozone layer absorbs almost all of the suns harmful rays. The ozone layer is becoming thinner.

Describe the structure and composition of the atmosphere

Troposphere: The lowest part of the Earths atmosphere. Contains 99% of the Earths water. Stratosphere: Second layer of the atmosphere. It is hotter higher. Mesosphere: Above the stratosphere, gets colder higher up. The upper part of the mesosphere is the coldest place on Earth Thermosphere: Above the Mesosphere, temperature is hotter higher up. Exosphere: Outermost layer of the atomosphere
