Enviormental wordviews How people think the world works and what their role should be Differ over which most important(i.e human needs and wants vs health of ecosystems and biosphere) *Human-centered=anthropocentric *Life-centered=biocentric Planentary Managment -We are seperate from and in charge of nature Stewardship -We manage nature for our benefit with an ethical responsibility to be stewards Enviormental Wisdom -We are part of nature and must engage in sustanible use II. What is Enviormental Policy? -Enviormental law, rules and regulations -Developed, implemented and endforced by goverment agencies III. How is Enviromental Policy Made? -Governments can use policies to encourage sustainable development Pass Laws Develope budgets Formulate regulations Levy taxes -Special interest groups try to influence policy makers Busines and coperations NGO's(i.e non-governmental organzations) eg. Labor unions, enviormental organizations, etc IV. Special Interest Groups -In the US, 8 million people belong to 300,000 + NGos dealing with enviromental issues International examples Worldwide Fund(WWF) Green peace The Nature conservancy

Seven Enviormental Policy Principles Humility-recongized our understanding of enviormental issues is limited Reversibility-try not to make irreversable decisions Net-Energy-do not encourage widespread of energy alternatives and technology with low net energy Precautionary-yeilds as they often require goverment subsides to complete in open markerts Prevention-prevent a problem from occuring or becoming worse Polluter-Pays-polluters bear the costs of dealing with the wastes they produce Envoirmental Justice-no group should bear an unfair share of the burden created by pollution enviromental degration or execution of laws VII. How can we use Economic Tools to Address Enivormental Problems? Full cost pricing(i.e include harmful enviromental and health costs in market prices of goods and services) *Subsidize enviormentally beneficals goods and services *Tax pollution and waste vs wages and profts
