Mouth and Teeth Student 1: Add 3 marbles and the PB&J squares to the labeled plastic bag.

Student 2: Add 1 oz of water to the bag and close it. Student 3: Mix the marbles and PB&J by squeezing the bag gently with your hands. Student 4: Cut off a small corner of the bag and squeeze the contents into the esophagus bag. Remember to keep the marbles in your bag!

Esophagus Student 1: Receive the contents from the mouth and close the bag. Move them down the esophagus by pushing it into the corner of the bag. Student 2: Cut off a small corner of the bag and squeeze the bolus into the stomach bag.

Stomach Student 1: Receive the contents from the esophagus and add 1 oz of vinegar. This represents the stomach acids that break down the food. Close the bag. Student 2: Mix the bolus and vinegar by squeezing the bag gently with your hands. Student 3: Cut off a small corner of the bag and squeeze the contents into the small intestine1, duodenum bag.

Small Intestine 1, Duodenum Student 1: Receive the contents from the stomach and add 1 oz of water to the bag. This represents juices from the gallbladder. Carefully pass the bag to student 2. Student 2: Add 1 oz of water. This represents juices from the liver. Student 3: Add 0.5 oz baking soda to the bag and close it. This represents bicarbonate from the pancreas. Student 4: Mix the contents by squeezing the bag gently with your hands. Student 5: Cut off a small corner of the bag and squeeze the contents into the small intestine2, jejunum and ileum.

Small Intestine 2, Jejunum and Ileum Student 1: Receive the contents from the first small intestine and remove 3 spoons of material from the bag. This represents the absorption of nutrients in the jejunum and ileum. Close the bag. Student 2: Cut off a small corner of the bag and squeeze the material into the large intestine.

Large Intestine Student 1: Receive the contents from the second small intestine. Add 3 pieces of sponge to the bag and close it. Squeeze the bag a little so the sponges can absorb some of the liquid. This represents the absorption of nutrients. Student 2: Cut off a small corner of the bag and squeeze the materials into the rectum bag. Remember to keep the sponges in your bag!

Rectum/Anus Student 1: Receive the contents from the large intestine and close the bag. Student2: Cut off a small corner of the bag and deposit the remaining materials into the toilet.
