The North had an economy that encouraged free labor on small farms while the South had an economy based on slave labor on plantations. Hence, the friction was a result of their differences. The North wanted to ban slavery and the South opposed because slaves were very profitable. In the 1850s, the North began working towards abolishing slavery; however the South threatened to withdraw from the Union (a term used to refer to the United States at the time) in order to stop the abolishment. In the late 1860s, Abraham Lincoln, the candidate of the Republican Party which stood against slavery, was elected president, and thus the South withdrew from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America, a separate government which conducted the Civil War. The Civil War ended with the victory of the North, promoting nationalism, and the defeat of the South and death of The Confederacy. The South no longer had rights to own slaves and hence lost a lot of power and money.

In the 1840s and 50s the Northern states wanted to prohibit slavery in the western territories that would eventually become new states. The Southern states opposed all efforts to block the expansion of slavery and feared that the Norths stance would eventually endanger existing slaveholdings in the South.
