The Official Richard Laymon Fan Club

ENTER AT YOUR OWN PERIL.
Hello and welcome to the ninth issue of the Official Richard Laymon Fan Club its been over FIFTEEN years since issue eight was produced, and there has been many changes during that time many new books have been released, one of the novels was released as a low budget fan-produced movie, but most notably (and sadly) was the passing of the Master of Terror Richard Laymon, whose absence in the horror genre has been felt for more than a decade, and whose inimitable style has never been surpassed. This issue marks a change in editorial leadership gone is Martin White, who set up and founded the original fan club and replacing him from this issue onwards will be M.O.G., the Master of Games, who promises to keep and refine many of the original features while bringing the fanzine more in tune with 21st century advancements such as e-book releases, Facebook pages etc. New features include short-tribute fan fiction (A Writers Tale), Reader dares (In the Dark), a feature on a particular book/theme each issue as well as many other exciting developments. We would love to hear from you (see details on the last page) about anything and everything Laymon related, including letters, photos, etc. The more interaction we have, the better this fanzine will become We kick off this issue with a feature on Laymons debut novel, The Cellar. Does the Beast House town of Malcasa Point exist? Is there more information available on the internet? A fifth (unofficial) beast house story? Any related merchandise available? These and other questions will hopefully be answered. Anyway, read on and enjoy:

THE OFFICIAL RICHARD LAYMON FAN CLUB ISSUE #9

Richard Laymons The Cellar

History: First published in 1980, The Cellar was a commercial success, selling over a quarter of a million copies in the original Warner edition alone. In the three decades that have followed it has been reprinted by various publishers, and seen print in a multitude of languages, including Japanese and Turkish. Officially, the novel spawned three sequels: The Beast House (1986), The Midnight Tour (1998) and Friday Night in Beast House (2001).

One of my more fascinating discoveries is that so many of them [the fans] name different books as their favorites of those Ive written. For many, The Cellar seems to be the most special partly because it was my first book they ever read, I suppose. Sort of like a first date Richard Laymon
Where is Malcasa Point? Sadly, Malcasa Point is a fictional town that was created by Richard Laymon in which the whole beast house mythology was set. It was supposed to be about 100 miles north of San Francisco according to the character, Donna. When her car crashed (as a result of fog) they had just passed Bodega Bay and from here they were transported to Malcasa Point. At the beginning of The Beast House, the Zipcode for The Welcome Inn in Malcasa Point, California is established to be 95405. This zipcode belongs to Santa Rosa, and is a short driving distance from Bodega Bay, the last real town encountered before Malcasa Point. However, the population of Malcasa Point (circa. 1980) is about 400 according to a sign Donna noticed as they entered the town. Santa Rosas size at this time was a staggering

82,658, or twenty times larger than the fictional town. So, while Santa Rosas proximity and zip code are both right for the basis of fictional town, its possible Richard Laymon scaled its population size down to better suit the dynamics of the story.

Where is the Beast House? Again, unfortunately the Beast House is not a real building, although it was inspired by two that Richard and Ann visited on route to getting married Winchester House, located in San Jose, California, and Hearst Castle, San Simeon, California. The Winchester Mystery House was once owned by the widow of an infamous gun magnate. Legend states that she believed the house was haunted by ghosts who fell victim to these rifles and only the continual construction on the house would appease them and keep her alive. For thirty-eight continuous years, work continued on the house 24 hours a day, until her death. The Queen Anne style Victorian Mansion is infamous for its size and complete lack of any master plan, staircases leading to nowhere, etc, supposedly so ghosts couldnt find her. For many years the house has been a tourist attraction and many different tours are available: A Grand Estate Tour, Mansion Tour, Behind the Scenes Tour and a FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH FLASHLIGHT TOUR. In the latter tour, you have only the moonlight and a souvenir flashlight to guide your way round the maze of rooms and stairways, with tickets purchased way ahead of time. In April 2012, Hammer Horror Films acquired the rights to make a movie based on the events that transpired at Winchester House and is currently in the early stages of production. Hearst Castle also offers various tours (Grand Rooms tour, Upstairs Suites tour, Cottages & Kitchens tour and an Evening Tour) and added to the inspiration Laymon drew upon when it came time to write the Cellar.

Information about Malcasa Point and The Beast House on the Internet Many moons ago, a fan (Samuel Layton Smith) helped to create an amazing tribute website to the Beast House and Malcasa Point based around the events that occur in Laymons novels. In addition there are links to food establishments, lodgings, things to do, the mayors office, books and a whole lot more. A couple of the links within the Web Links section are no longer valid, but otherwise its a fantastic source of information, especially after reading the Beast House stories. You can explore the site directly at: www.malcasapoint.com Additionally, the site: www.boundless-imaginations.com has the opening sample chapter to most of Laymons books. On the site, click on Richard Laymon, then the two lines of text beneath Bibliography and finally, The Cellar. Scroll down and click the link near the bottom to access the prologue to the story and the beginning of the entire grisly tale Other Great Web Sites to see and discuss Richard Laymon:

Is there a Fifth Beast House Book? Aside from a possible stuffed Beast making a crossover appearance in Funland, there was until recently no other reference or similarities to anything relating to the Beast House universe. However, in 2001, Brian Keene (an established and prominent horror writer) submitted a short story entitled Castaways as his short story submission to the Laymon tribute volume In Laymons Terms. Inspired by both the Beast House mythos and the reality TV show Survivor, Castaways was a tale about a reality show set on an island unknowingly inhabited by a sub-human race of creatures. In the Beast House stories, the creatures are originally from a small island close to Australia, which is close to the area where Keenes novel is based. After some reader interaction and feedback, the short story was developed into a novel and was released in 2009. However, although the beasts appear in many ways to be similar to those depicted in the Beast House, in other ways they are not. So, think of the Beasts in this novel as coming from a neighbouring isle to those depicted in Malcasa Point and you have a loosely connected Beast related tale to read and enjoy. Although there is no direct connection between Keenes and Laymons universe, it is still a pleasant read and a great tribute tale to the late, great Master of Terror. As Keene himself said, it was personal in the manner that I wrote it as a tribute to Laymon, who was a good friend and mentor, and I wanted to make sure it honored his memory I wanted to write something that I thought hed dig. If you purchase a copy of Keenes Castaways, please avoid the Leisure Edition as he receives no royalties from that edition of the novel.

Is there any Beast House Merchandise available? Many years ago, a limited number of special police patches were created to coincide with the Cemetery Dance publishing a lettered edition of Friday Night in Beast House. The Badges depict the police force of Malcasa Point, made famous in Laymons tales and are quite a rare collectors item. In addition, you can buy some of Alan M. Clarks artwork (as limited edition prints (around $20) or pay substantially more to acquire a one of a kind original piece of artwork. Alan created much of the illustrative material depicted in the books that Cemetery Dance have published of Richard Laymon.

Also, if you use a bit of creativity and ingenuity there is nothing to stop you from creating your own personalized material (as long as you dont breech any copyright rules and intend to distribute it). Examples include a custom-made monopoly board (goggle makeyourownopoly as one word), toptrumps, playing cards, mugs, badges, etc. There are many sites that allow you to create your own items. Did you Know

The original title for The Cellar was Beast House. However, around this time John Belushis movie Animal House was released and Laymons US publisher decided to change the title to avoid any association with the movie. Laymon like the original title, and several years later (and with a different publisher) The Beast House was born. One of the beasts may have appeared as a stuffed exhibit among Jaspars Oddities in the novel Funland. However, its not 100% certain whether it was one of the beasts or a hairless orangutan of Borneo as no formal positive identification was made before the creature disappeared, according to text within The Midnight Tour.

A Writers Tale: Fan Tribute Fiction

Are you creatively minded and have thought of a story similar to Richard Laymons style or maybe even a possible sequel/prequel to one of the books? If the answer is yes to any of the above, we would love to hear from you and if you have a short piece of fiction (no more than 2,000 words) then it may be possible to include it in a future issue and get your work in print in the process! Drop us a line at: theofficialrichardlaymonfanclub@facebook.com The short story detailed below was penned by the Master Of Games a number of years ago, and was in part inspired by Laymons chapbook Tel l Me a Tale. Be forewarned, its not for the squeamish or the under 18s and is called Dinner at Eds

Dinner at Eds by M.O.G. Karen opened her eyes. Her head was pounding and as she tried to move herself slightly, a white-hot pain streaked through her head. Tasting a mixture of blood and sweat, a sticky trickle of it seemed to have oozed its way down her face and neck and across the smooth mounds of her breasts. Suddenly aware that she was naked, she tried to move, only for the pain to intensify, and panting for breath, she remained still and tried to recall what had happened. The last thing she could remember was leaving the bar late the previous evening. Karen had walked back to her car, keeping an eye open for anyone that might be following her. With a curvaceous figure most women would kill for and a charm that could allure any red-blooded male with a pulse, she attracted attention wherever she went, regardless of whether she sought it or not. It had always been like that. Karen had grown up accustomed to the attention and even nurtured it when it suited her. Moving her lower body slightly, she hissed in pain, as her ankles felt like hot coals had been placed on them. Suddenly, she remembered the rest: as she had opened the car door, her ankles had buckled in a world of pain. Recalling that she had looked down as she began to fall to the ground, shed seen an outstretched arm under her car, with what looked like an old fashioned razor blade in its hand. She'd been cut across both heels, severing her Achilles tendons and rendering her unable to stand. As she crashed to the sidewalk her hands had tried in vain to

soften the blow as her head hit concrete. Rough, oily hands reached out from beneath the car and as her lungs struggled to get a breath, a dirty rag enveloped her nose and mouth. Slipping into unconsciousness, darkness had enveloped her. Karen whimpered as she realised what had happened and tried to clear her mind of the hazy dizziness that still fought to subdue her. In an attempt to establish where she was, she tried to focus on what she could see. Peering around, she appeared to be in a barn, with a timber-frame sticking out from a wall a few inches above her head, obscuring most of her visibility. It felt cold and damp and a musty smell lingered in the air. Trying not to gag, she swallowed and recognised the metallic taste of blood caked on her tongue. "Sleeping beauty is awake" came a voice from nearby. The voice startled her. She tried to turn towards the source of the voice but was once again hit by an unbearable pain, which resonated in her skull. "Wouldn't move if I were you honey. Got you wrapped up real nice. Woo-wee, that cut on your head's a real doozey." As she struggled for breath through the waves of pain with gritted teeth, one of the shadows nearby moved, and the mans face came into view. If you could call it a man. Unable to scream through the wave of pain and terror, her eyes were transfixed on his face: deep set, almost hollow eyes, leered at her through slightly tinted sunglasses. The nose appeared to have been broken on several occasions and the tip was missing as though someone or something had bitten it off. Where there was once a mouth, the lips and some of the skin was missing, exposing several rotten teeth along with a blackened gum-line even though his jaws appeared to be closed. "My, youre a fine one." he said. "I had me a great time with you last night, almo st a shame you weren't awake to enjoy it." He laughed at his own joke and spittle rattled through his damaged mouth and teeth and sprayed onto Karen's face and upper body. "A real shame." "Who are you?" Karen managed to say, as the shock of what loomed over her temporarily made her forget the pains that racked her body. He looked surprised, as if she should have known who she was. "It's me, Ed. Teddy? Don't you remember? I'm your Teddy Bear.... At least I was, once. Till you dumped me for ol' Mike in the third grade. I ain't never forgot that, but its ok cause I forgive you and we're together now. Forever 'n' ever." A glint of malice appeared in his eyes and as he tried to muster a grin, the gaping hole across his face widened, exposing more vacuous space, rotting teeth and what looked like a blackened rotting tongue. With his face looming six inches over Karen, she suddenly smelt a rotten fetid decay-like odour emanating from his mouth and tried desperately to stifle a gag. "Teddy? My god, is that really you" she finally managed to say in between shallow breaths. "What the hell happened to you? I havent seen you in, what , fifteen years, since my family moved from Bakersfield and I was what, 6 years old?" "Yer havent changed Karen, not one bit, yer just got prettier," said Ed. His eyes glazed over as he continued, "'cept you got them mighty fine lumps now." Watching his eyes roam her body, he let out a bellowing laugh, spraying saliva and what appeared to be fetid bits of meat across her face and body. Karen dry heaved and passed out. When she awoke Karen found herself upright, but unable to support her own weight. Tied, crucifix-style, to what appeared to be a scarecrow's pole, the bulk of her weight taken up by her arms, which were wrapped in wire, around the arms of the horizontal pole. Somewhere nearby, she could hear Ed singing a rendition of Elvis's "Just wanna be your Teddy Bear." A shiver ran up her spine, igniting goose-bumps across her body. Ed came into view from her peripheral vision and waved at her through his darkened glasses. "You'll be meeting Warren, Bill and George soon," he said and chuckled to himself. And a whole load of my other buddies too." Karen wanted to scream, but stifled it, focusing on trying to find a way out of the situation. The Ed she had known back in Junior School had always been a bit of a loner and even then he'd shown signs of becoming a malevolent child - biting the heads off of caterpillars and placing the still wriggling bodies under the clothing of other children had landed him in detention on more than one occasion. She supposed he'd taken it too far later in life, which had resulted in someone assaulting his face, but didnt dare ask for fear of upsetting him. She had no idea why Ed thought they'd once dated - the closest they'd ever come to having a date was when her parents had invited Ed, along with several other school children, to Karens 6th birthday party at a local diner. She recalled trying to enjoy her big day, without the caterpillar kid causing any d isruptions.

"Ol' Bill, he's mighty ravenous," said Ed. "I was real tempted to cut me a little bit of one of your toes off to give him a treat. He loves human flesh, got a real taste for it. Truth is, all three of em do. I mean, I tried it myself, like a couple o' times but I ain't fussed one way or t'other." My God, Karen thought, with a new depth of horror. These guys are cannibals, How the fuck am I gonna get out of this? "I'll be back reallllll soon," said Ed. I've just gotta make a few preparations for my.... I mean, our, guests." He laughed again to himself, as if amused by some inner joke and continued to whistle 'teddy bear' as he left the barn. Karen remained shackled to the scarecrows pole for what seemed like hours. No light seeped inside, so she had no idea if it was day or night and her periodic cries for help went unanswered. After what could have been an hour, or several hours, Ed returned with a large cardboard box carried across both his arms. "Hiya Darling, you ready for the party?" he beamed, displaying his rotten teeth once more to Karen. Even worse, she noticed that Ed was now naked, and after putting the box down beside her, was erect and leering at her with lust filling his deep pitted eyes. Chewing gum at the same time, Karen could see the gum being masticated in his mouth even though his jaw was shut. She didnt know which of these observations freaked her out the most. "Time for introductions," Ed said. Opening the cardboard box, he produced a pickle jar from within and held it up in front of Karen. "Karen, meet Bill, George and Warren. Bill, George and Warren meet Karen." At first she was confused as she peered into the jar. Then, at the very bottom mixed in among some dead leaves, and what appeared to be decaying meat, she saw three cockroaches, two of which were quite small, the third was plump and larger than the other two combined. "Ol' Bill and Warren they ain't but 6 weeks old but ol' George, well, Georgina I guess, she's heavily pregnant and fit to burst anytime soon. Did ya know these critters can have up to forty babies? I sure didn't at first. Now, I'm gonna turn you around and if yer struggle some, I'm gonna have to un-pretty ya again which'd be a shame wouldn't it?" Karen watched in horror as Ed removed the lid from the jar and took a small tube out of the cardboard box beside her feet, and went around behind her. Her eyes shot wide open as she felt rough, nailed fingers at her anal passage and screamed as two of the fingers tried to pry the hole wider. Attempting to squeeze her buttocks together, she felt the nails pinch deep into her flesh and suddenly an intense pain ran through the side of her skull as shards of glass sprayed off her head and the glass jar shattered into several pieces. Ed had launched it full force into the side of her head. Karen lost consciousness. A stabbing feeling in her stomach brought Karen abruptly around from her stupor. Almost immediately she felt a second wave of pain deep inside her, within her crotch. She was no longer held in place on the scarecrow stand, but curled up on her side on the floor, shards of glass all around her. "Well, lookee here. Didn't think you'd be awake for a while yet. Only just finished the party and what a party it's been. You've been a great host," said Ed laughing at his own joke, "A great host indeed!" Karen screamed, the pain seemed to come from several places at once, and she had to resist the strong temptation to start clawing away at her flesh. She felt like she was being nibbled from within. "What the fuck did you do?" she screamed. She noticed her hands were no longer tied. "You caused me all sorts of problems Missy, after you made me smash that jar over your head. Had a hellov'a job getting Bill and Warren back I can tell ya. Ol' George was so fat and ready to burst that she just didnt move from where she fell, but them other fellas took a few minutes to ca tch, I can tell ya. Course, they all loved it when I placed em in that narrow tube and attached the other end to your ass. Had to widen ya a little, but that worked out just dandy, as the blood acted as a trail for them to follow. Once they'd entered far enough inside ya, I used my gum along with some mighty strong glue to seal ya up. So ya see, they aint gonna be coming back out that way, no sirree. They cant get back out that way. Only way for em is through yer intestines, and maybe they'll reach yer stomach, although I reckon ol' Georgell pop her load way before then. But, thats only the half of it. Y'see, I was mighty hungry too, and had me a bucket of chicken, only I couldnt finish it. Left one or two half eaten drumsticks in there" he said, gesturing between her legs. "The fireants I added from another jar, were mighty appreciative of the meal, I can tell ya. In fact, they probably still are, seeing as I sealed ya up there with some glue too. I guess, with the drumsticks deep within ya, your gonna have a permanent bone-r in ya now", Ed said spraying yet more saliva in Karens direction.

Karen began to convulse with pain and rolled onto her stomach with shards of glass piercing her flesh. She tried desperately to think of what to do as pain racked every fibre of her body and she felt things, scratching, burrowing and nibbling deep within her most personal orifices. Ed watched Karen twitch for a while, before her body suddenly stopped moving and her breathing became shallow and less laboured. She'd passed out again. He regretted it when she was unconscious. She was missing out on so much fun, all of it at her expense of course. He cleared a small space of broken glass away by his feet, and knelt down beside her. What could he try next, he wondered to himself. He still had her mouth, nose, ear and eyes to work with if need be, and each of those would require a degree of creativity as to which insect would be best for each hole. Maybe some baby spiders in her ear-drums, and then seal them? Of course she wouldnt hear herself scream much then, but he needed to save her nose and mouth for last so she could breatheunless he made a new hole in her trachea? He smiled to himself and leaned over her body, so as to pick her up and return her to the scarecrows pole. As he put his right arm around her back and was about to lift her, he saw at the last moment something reflective coming towards his face. Deflecting it a mere inch or so, he couldn't stop the blow from striking his face. Pain erupted from his left eye, which exploded in a ooze of mush, as a shard of glass in Karens left hand penetrated the socket. He wailed, and let go of her, rolling onto his side, both hands cradling the gloop that was dripping out of the socket. Within seconds he felt a second wave of pain, this time across his neck. Blood gushed freely from a laceration deeply formed on his neck. With one hand trying to stem the blood and the other holding the last remnants of his eye in place, he screamed, wailed and shrieked a string of obscenities and tried to get to his feet. Almost upright , he felt a sharp pain in his ankle. Looking down with his good eye, he saw Karen had stabbed him in the ankle, although fortunately for him it appeared to be a flesh wound and hadn't severed his tendons. More importantly, the fragment of glass had broken, striking his ankle-bone, and Karen spent precious seconds lunging toward another piece of broken glass. As quick as he was able, he moved away and once fully upright, bolted toward the door, leaving a trail of crimson fluid in his wake. Blood continued to gush from his neck and he had a hard time judging in which direction to go, as blood from the empty socket erupted across his face including his one remaining good eye. Karen wheezed and winced as she watched Ed reach the door and flee beyond it. Her right hand was badly lacerated from the glass and her left arm was the only torso that remained in fully operational use. Waves of pain wracked her body from a multitude of locations and she struggled to remain conscious. She'd done well to suppress the pain to a certain extent, allowing Ed to believe she'd passed out. Now, she was in danger of passing out for real, with all likelihood that she might never regain consciousness. About ten metres away, resting on a bundle of hay, she spotted what looked like her clothing, although it appeared it had been cut off, as they were lots of frayed edges everywhere. Using her good arm, she slowly crawled across the barn floor, not bothering to clear a path of glass shards away and reached the clothing. As she thought, the clothes were useless, but she felt inside a trouser pocket and found her cell-phone. It was switched off. Panicking, she thumbed the on button and silently prayed there was going to be both battery power and reception to make the call she needed to the emergency services.... Two years later, a noise at the front door disturbed the occupant of the house. Snoop, the Alsatian began to bark, and as the owner approached the door, she took a .45 colt from just under the pillowcase where she was resting and approached the door. "Who's there?" she called out. Looking at the clock she saw it was getting close to midnight. Snoop stopped barking, whoever was there had gone, if indeed anyone had been there at all. As she returned to bed, she began to once again re-live the same nightmares she'd suffered for the last two years and would probably continue to do so for many years to come. She'd managed to call the emergency services and they'll came and taken her straight away to Saint Barts Hospital. Not knowing where she was, they were able to trace her cell-phone location to within a hundred metres. Upon entry, they were shocked and horrified at the extent of her injuries and diligently fought to remove all traces of solvent from both her anal and vaginal openings. All the fire-ants were removed from her vaginal cavity and the cockroaches were removed from her stomach, after emergency surgery was performed. The larval sac of 'George' was fortunately still intact but within minutes of being transferred to a medical specimen jar, the cockroach immediately burst forth with a litter of baby roaches

that scampered about inside the jar. The laceration to the right hand was quite serious, and even now as Karen had returned to bed and put the gun away under the pillow, her hand still ached from the old wound. The doctors told her that as a result of her injuries, she would most likely find sex too painful to bear and would be infertile unless she were to consider using a surrogate mother for her eggs. Not for the first time and definitely not the last, Karen cried herself to sleep. She awoke the next day feeling a bit better. She always did. Either that or go mad. Getting ready for work, she fed Snoop and opened the front door. A large manila packet lay propped up against the door. It had no address label, no return address and was sealed. She felt its contents - it was soft inside, not unlike a tiny cushion or pillow. She opened the envelope, along the perforated line. Inside the envelope was a furry object, bundled into a ball with a rubber band. She wondered what it was, as she released the rubber band and unfolded the item. Her eyes went wide and bulged. It was a teddy bear. Not just any teddy bear, but a well used, old soiled teddy with one eye missing. The bear wore sunglasses she instantly recognised: Ed's. She felt a little lump by her fingers and noticed some of the stuffing was missing near the neck- line. A large slit had been made across the neck and inside where the stuffing should be, there was a small vial inside. Hands shaking, she took the vial out. Inside the vial was the missing eye of the teddy bear and a small folded piece of paper. Opening the vial and reading the message, she muttered the words "Eye'll be having you over for dinner one day my pretty. Soon." She screamed, as from somewhere within the house, came the familiar music of Elvis's "Teddy Bear".

Resurrection Dreams: Richard Laymon Talks

Below is part 1 in a series of extracts from the Master of Terror message board in which fans express their opinions about Laymons books and ask questions, which he always found time to respond to. We start at the beginning, just after the creation of the board, which began AFTER MIDNIGHT on 13th of January, 1998 (Posts have been edited for spelling, etc and some posts omitted which received no response or were off topic).
Jan 13, 1998 Andy Fairclough Over the past few years Richard Laymon has become one of my very favourite authors. There is always a great anticipation for me before I turn to page one of an unread Laymon novel. His novels are intense and very different. Hard to pick a favourite thus far but probably THE WOODS ARE DARK just shades it. ............. Jan 15, 1998 Richard Laymon LarDunbar@AOL.com Thanks so much for the nice things you've been saying about me, Andy, and for doing a Richard Laymon message board. I've just finished two new books. One is A WRITER'S TALE, which is non-fiction. It's like a "Laymon companion" but includes a lot of material that I hope will be very useful to aspiring writers. A WRITER'S TALE is being published this spring by Deadline Press here in the States (the same folks who published A GOOD, SECRET PLACE). The other book I just finished is THE MIDNIGHT TOUR, a really BIG book. It will make a trilogy out of THE CELLAR and BEAST HOUSE. Takes place in the present, and the manuscript was over 900 pages long. Didn't think I'd EVER get it finished. I'll drop by this message board every so often to see what's going on. Best Regards Jan 15, 1998 Faisal Ahmad Cool! Richard Laymon. I can't believe I'm talking to the man himself. I hope you drop by to answer posted questions. My own question is about THE STAKE. I enjoyed this book, a lot. I actually found the sub plot (involving Lane and the teacher Kramer) better than the main plot, (probably because it had that troubled streak of pain running through it). Ok, the question. The best parts were when Larry Dunbar sat down to write. You wrote

"Notes for Oct 13 (or whatever the date was)". The way he came to his ideas, is that the way you yourself write? If not, then how do you get round to it? Also you then wrote "vampire story? Nah, that's been done to death" yet THE STAKE was a vampire tale!! Was that a deliberate piece of wry humour. I thought it was pretty amusing. Later. Jan 17, 1998 Eric Richard, when will you be doing another signing at "Dark Delicacies". I missed you last time you were there, but not the next time. Thanks. Jan 19, 1998 Chuck Byrd Greetings, Just wanted to add a few of my favorite Laymon novels: Savage, The Cellar, Funland, Beware, and Body Rides. Anything Richard writes is worth finding and reading. Jan 21, 1998 <Anonymous> Hi Richard! I have been reading you since the early 80's. My first book was Woods Are Dark, and after that I was hooked! I just have a question, why dont they publish more of your books in America? I was shocked when I went to an online book company in UK and saw all these titles I never heard of! And all published in England. Wow I am really behind now on your books. After Midnight looks to be very interesting, and I love the cover! Titles like Body Rides, Beware, Island, Bite, Fiends, In the Dark, All Hallow's, Endless Night, are all new to me! I just wish they would publish some of these in America. If you can respond to me or post a response here. Later! Jan 21, 1998 Paul Legerski Hodgeite Laymonites, Finally a site for a well deserved author. Laymon Rules!! Faves are Funland, Stake, Darkness Tell Us, After Midnight and his short stories are great! Richard, I'm the Potato Peeler Killer, remember me?? Take care. Jan 22, 1998 Laura Elvin Hello All, I'm a new fan of Richard Laymon. VERY interested in getting "Writer's Tale". I'll stay tuned to find out where and when I can get my hands on it. Also, do you, Mr Laymon (anyone can answer really), have a collection of short stories? Thanks, Laura Jan 22, 1998 Steve Gerlach Hi Andy, Great to see a message board up for Richard. Keep up the good work. By the way, can't help agreeing with you, THE WOODS ARE DARK, is his best novel! Drop in at the Richard Laymon Kills! site sometime, 26,000 Laymon fans can't be wrong! Richard Laymon Kills! http://www.crafti.com.au/~gerlach/rlaymon.htm Join the Richard Laymon Mailing list at gerlach@crafti.com.au Jan 22, 1998 John Hi! My name is john, and even though I am only a casual employee at Galaxy Bookshop in Sydney, Australia, Mr Laymon, it would be a great honour to everyone at Galaxy, if you could be so kind that you could come for a visit at our shop and perhaps a book signing. Mr Laymon if this is possible, could you please send me an email??!! Thanks so much!! sickbobby@yahoo.com or if you want to get in touch with Galaxy Bookshop: sf@galaxybooks.com.au Jan 23, 1998 Chris Hi-This is Chris, another Australian, and great admirer of your work-I agree with John: doing a book signing at The Galaxy bookshop would be fantastic. Why is it that everyone tends to overlook your greatest novel "Savage"? Thanks. Jan 23, 1998 Trent Okay, time for a small bit of shameless promotion . . . a group of guys in Chicago have made a trailer for a proposed feature-length film of Laymon's "Resurrection Dreams." They're trying to get some grass-roots, fanbased feedback on it. The trailer is available for download at the LAYMON KILLS website. Pease check it out and

send your comments/criticisms to: thaaga@edrive.com - your comments (as Laymon fans - the ones who would watch the film) would be greatly appreciated! Trent in NYC Jan 23, 1998 Chuck Byrd Laura, Richard has two collections out: 1. A Good Secret Place 1993 DeadlinePress 574 copies. 2. Fiends 1998 Headline Pub. Jan 23, 1998 Sam Nibali Hiya, i would just like to say thank you to Ricahrd Laymon for his books. Your work(as well as Dean Koontz) has really inspired me in my somewhat amateurish work...(is that how you spell it?) I would have to say my favourite books are Body Rides, Bite, The Stake and One Rainy Night. I like the recent books written by Laymon more then his earlier pieces because well, his newer books have more feeling, more expression in them, which makes the horror within those pages a lot more fun to readand did I mention they'r e longer.... I especially love Laymon vampire novels. He has only published two to my knowledge though, so hopefully more will come out in the near future! He adds a strange new twist to the otherwise familiar world of the evil undead... Jan 25, 1998 Geoff Payne I have been reading your novels for almost 4 years now (starting with Endless Night), and I am wondering why anyone would want to make what I consider to be one of your worst books ("Resurrection Dreams") into a movie. Endless Night, Flesh, Quake, Body Rides, The Stake or One Rainy Night would have been much better options. Jan 25, 1998 Reanimated Dear Richard Laymon (and everyone else) I just finished reading Dean Koontz book Fear Nothing and I thought it was very good. As with all his books, it was exciting and interesting. What I have been thinking about though is that his books are getting tamer with each new one he is putting out. I dont know, maybe some would disagree. But I have noticed this with a few writers. Dont hate me, but Stephen Kings books now...they rock!! But they aren't HORROR!!! Clive Barker too!! And I wonder if its got something to do with the fact that these guys are getting old...no?? Sure there are plenty of new guys out there, a new fave of mine is Simon Clark, or John Douglas, or Mark Burnell...but these guys seem to lack the really!!! REALLY!! cool ideas some of the big guys get.. and now those cool ideas, though cool, lack the HORROR!!! MY FEAR: that Richard Laymon will go this way also...I really hope not. But I find when I read a Richard Laymon book I'm not as worried anymore that some of the main characters are gonna go crazy or be slaughtered as they did in some of his earlier works...dont get me wrong!! LAYMON IS HORROR!!! Even if the main characters live!! LOL!!! OH SHIT!! YOU GUYS MUST THINK I'M FUCKED!! But anyway... just a thought. Jan 27, 1998 Matt Taylor Actually, Richard Laymon has three collections out. A GOOD, SECRET PLACE.....FIENDS......and....OUT ARE THE LIGHTS. Each of them is excellent. In fact, of all the writers publishing today, I'd say that Richard Laymon is by far and away the most consistent writer out there. Disappointments are RARE. Best novel? I'd say a toss-up between SAVAGE and Endless Night. Cool board. Richard Laymon is best. Jan 29, 1998 Andy Fairclough Thanks to everyone for making this probably the most popular message board at the site. I am sure that Richard Laymon will be pleased with all the activity when he passes this way again. One comment to make at this point is to whoever said that RESURRECTION DREAMS was one of Laymon's worst books. RESURRECTION DREAMS was the book that got me hooked on Laymon in the first place and remains one of my favourites. The novel blew me away with its simplicity. It doesn't matter why or how things happened, what was important was that they HAPPENED. After years of stuffy, predictable horror reading RESURRECTION DREAMS was like a breath of clean air and the start of my passion for all things Laymon. - your sitemaster - Andy Fairclough. Jan 29, 1998

Reanimated I agree Andy!!!! I thought Resurrection Dreams was amazing!!!!!! I have noticed a lot of the Laymon readers on here prefer his newer novel rather than some of the older ones (Nightshow, Funland, Cellar etc.) Oh well...just wanted to say I agree with you!!! I really enjoy your Board here Andy!! ...oh and by the way!!! I just finished reading his "First Date" story from Love In Vein...it was a pretty cool story!!! Jan 31, 1998 Paul Legerski Hodgeite I agree that DREAMS was brilliant. It was my 1st and you always remember your first! Feb 2 ,1998 Richard Laymon LarDunbar@AOL.com Richard Laymon, here. When I first looked at the message board, there was only the original message from Andy. I couldn't believe the response when I saw it yesterday. I'm a bit overwhelmed. Thanks so much to all of you for the nice things you said about my work. Faisal -- thanks for your comments on THE STAKE. The writing business of Larry Dunbar was based very much on my own experiences. I do work in much the same way he does. And I've experienced similar editorial situations. Glad you enjoyed the humor about vampire stories being "done to death." Eric -- I usually have a signing at Dark Delicacies whenever a new book comes out for me to sign. Nothing is scheduled for the near future, though.. Hi to Chuck and Trent, the Potato Peeler Killer, Steve and my other old friends and acquaintances. Neat to see you on the message boards. I find it really interesting that so many people have such strong reactions to THE WOODS ARE DARK. For a long time, nobody ever talked about anything except THE CELLAR. But I keep hearing from more and more people who talk about Woods as if it's one of my best. Cool. Interesting, too, about the major differences of opinion about Resurrection Dreams. What I've discovered, it's mostly a matter of individual taste and doesn't necessarily have much to do with the intrinsic quality of a book. Laura -- I'll give more information about A Writer's Tale when I get it. It is supposed to be published by May of this year. At this point, however, I don't know the price or where to order it. Hi, sickboy. I e-mailed you a note later, but it didn't get through. I'll try again soon. I do suggest you might contact Headline about having a signing at Galaxy bookshop when I come to Australia. If and/or when I get there, I'm really looking forward to meeting you and Chris and of course Steve Gerlach. The Resurrection Dreams trailer that Trent mentions is really neat. I've shown it to my family and some friends and everybody gets a kick out of it. Really captures the spirit of the book. Sam -- It was very nice to get your comments about my vampire novels, especially since BITE has gotten some really stinky reviews. I'm glad to hear that you like my more recent novels better than the earlier ones. The early ones had a lot of impact, in ways, but were sort of sketchy. I try to develop stuff more nowadays. But I still like to write the quick, fast books. I'd be curious to learn more about which kind of book you all prefer -- the fast ones like Midnight's Lair, One Rainy Night, Bite, etc., or the more developed ones such as In the Dark, Body Rides, Savage, etc.? I actually like to do both kinds -- alternating to a certain extent. I have noticed that a lot of writers seem to grow more tame as time goes by. I'll try to keep delivering the nasty stuff. I'm not too worried about going tame, since I nearly always have to cut out material because my agent or editor say I've gone too far. Had to cut some stuff from After Midnight and I wouldn't be surprised if they ask me to cut a thing or two from the next one, The Midnight Tour. (I take things pretty far in Midnight Tour, which is the third book of Beast House series. A little more -- I think I've gone on long enough for now. I'll be back soon, however, and respond to more messages. Thanks again to all of you. So long for now.
