Other materials have tightly held electrons, and allow little

insulators. Rubber, plastic, and ceramic materials are the
most common insulators, and are used to keep electricity

Even in conductors with little opposition to electron flow,

there is still some friction as the electrons bounce off
each other, and other atoms. Like the friction we feel
when we rub our hands together, the movement creates
heat. This electrical friction is called resistance. As you
might expect, a material of high resistance would allow
less current to pass through compared to a material of
Figure 1-1 Atoms low resistance, with the same voltage applied. This
characteristic of electricity can be compared directly to
the flow of water through a hose, where a high resistance
results in an obvious reduction in flow, even though the
supply pressure stays the same.

RELAYS
A
Relays are often used in Scag equipment to switch a
large electrical load with a small signal voltage from other
switches, or to alter the action of switches which may D B
have multiple functions. Examples are the start relays,
and the starter solenoid on some engines.
C
A relay has two terminals that connect to a winding
(B & D). When voltage is applied to the winding, the
magnetic field pulls internal switch contacts together,
closing the circuit through the other two terminals
(A & C). See Figure 1-15.
D C
When testing a relay with an ohmmeter, there should be
continuity through the D & B leads. When connecting
the meter to the A & C switched leads, there should be
no continuity.

If voltage is supplied to the winding leads, the contacts

close, and a circuit is established between the switched
leads. An ohmmeter can be used to check continuity
through the relay contacts.

All possible situations would be impossible to review,

however the basic principles of circuit identification and
component testing apply to all parts of the electrical B A
system. Make comparisons between the demonstrations
you have seen in the video and an actual situation in your
dealership. Figure 1-15 Relay Schematic

With a thorough knowledge of the system, you should be

able to identify a method of testing which will be quick
and accurate.
