Welcome to Grades 5 & 6!

~ Mlle. Caroline

Bienvenue! Welcome! The following are quick descriptions based on the overall expectations of grade five and six subjects; for more detail, and specific curriculum expectations, visit: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/grade5.html or http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/grade6.html. Please note: the descriptions are for subjects that I will teach as your childs classroom teacher. We are privileged to have specialized teachers as well. Arts (visual, drama and dance) & Media Literacy: Mlle Camellia. Arts (music): TBD. Library Skills: Mme. Attridge. Physical Education: Mme. Stephanie. Science: M. Bruno. FRENCH/LE FRANAIS French encompasses oral communication, reading, writing and grade-appropriate language structures (eg: the use of the imparfait tense with er, ir and re verbs). The strategies and types of texts (both fiction and non-fiction) studied in French will often mirror our work in Language Arts, to strengthen skills. HEALTH/LA SANT We will be studying healthy eating, personal safety, safe choices (in relation to substance addiction), and growth and development. LANGUAGE ARTS We will be covering writing, reading and oral communication. This is done by mastering reading strategies such as visualizing, synthesizing, and inferring while analyzing and creating various fiction and non-fiction texts. Some of the types of texts we will be encountering this year are: (5/6) mystery/suspense, research reports, historical fiction/biography, graphic organizers, humour/science fiction, and newspapers. MATHEMATICS We will be studying: whole numbers to one place value larger, decimal numbers to one place value smaller than the year before (Number Sense and Numeration); area and volume (Measurement); polygons and angles(Geometry and Spatial Sense); patterns and expressions (Patterning and Algebra); and interpreting data and probability experiments (Data Management and Probability). RELIGION AND FAMILY LIFE We will be experiencing prayer daily, looking at weekly readings, and examining witnesses of Faith in the past and today. Family life, a combination of religion and health, will look at emotional and physical development and growth. SOCIAL STUDIES / LES TUDES SOCIALES We will be following the new curriculum for social studies. The grade fives will be beginning with government, and the grade sixes will be beginning with Canadas links to the world.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS DICTIONARIES Students must have access to a French/English dictionary as well as a French/French dictionary at home as well as in the classroom. Such dictionaries can be purchased at most bookstores. Please look for a reputable dictionary (examples are Robert Collins, Larousse, or Harraps) and a decent size something like 20 000 words. Children can use online dictionaries for work at home. Please do use these as dictionaries, and avoid online translators, which may cause more harm than good. An example of a proper French/English-English/French online dictionary: http://wordreference.com/enfr/. DRESS CODE The navy and white dress code is expected to be strictly followed in the classroom. As our classroom has a climate control system, students are asked to be prepared with a long-sleeved navy-blue top/sweater, regardless of the weather. Students may keep this on their hook, if they do not wish to bring it home and back every day. Remember, your clothing should not have the brand name visible (logos smaller than a loonie). MISSED WORK Should your student miss any classes, he/she is encouraged to ask a peer for instructions on what was done that day, and is required to catch up with the work as soon as possible. PENS AND PENCILS Within this classroom, the expectation will be that pencils are in use. Corrections can be made with a pen, as can final copies of written work (that have been through the revising and editing processes). SIGNING AGENDA BOOKS, TESTS, ETC. I will initial the list of homework and then circle one of the emoticons ( ) in relation to his/her behaviour for the day. Tests and graded assignments will be sent home for caregiver signature. TRIPS All trips leaving the vicinity of the school will be based on curriculum expectations. Parents will be advised of these trips and given an opportunity to volunteer on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me at the school at 416-393-5273 or let me know via the agenda. Working together, we will have a great year!
