Math Word Problems

1. Multiply – If you see the words “in all, altogether,
in a row, same # of, etc,” and you DO NOT know
the total, then you must multiply.
2. Divide – If you see the words ”share, equal
amounts, how many in each, etc” and you DO
know the total, then you must divide,

Prime numbers
1- Have only 2 factors. 1 and the number itself.
(3,7,13)
Composite numbers –
1- Have more than 2 factors. (, 12,21,33)

Fractions
1- Adding or subtracting like denominators – Add the
numerators and keep the denom. the same.
2- Adding or subtracting different denominators- find
a common denom. and then add or sub.
3. Reducing fractions- 4/8
Find the GCF
A. Make a list of factors for the numerator and then
the denominator
B. Circle the factors they have in common.
C. Divide the num and den by the GREATEST
COMMON FACTOR.
4=1,4,2
8=1,8.2.4
GCF =4 so 4/4=1
8/4=2
So, 4/8 reduced =1/2

****Remember - If the numerator is half of the

denominator, then the fraction is equal to ½.

Finding a Common Denominator

A. Make a list of multiples for each denominator
(that means you have to count by that
denom.)
B. Circle the Least Common Multiple. (LCM)
Use that for your new denominator and find
equivalent fractions.

How to tell if Fractions are Equivalent

1 Cross multiply
2. Find equiv fractions with same denominator
