English words commonly mispronounced by Filipinos A. The following list was put together by an accent trainer: 1.

vitae - should be pronounced as vee-tie ( the way we pronounce the "tie" in necktie); the first syllable should be lengthened. 2. mango - should be pronounced as maeng-go ( To pronounce "ae" , drop your jaw as if to say A, then from that position, try to say EH. It is close to the sound that a goat makes: ma-a-a-ah! Your jaw should be lowered (mouth wide open); Most Filipinos pronounce it as " Mayng-go" which is incorrect. 3. cocoa - should be pronounced as kow-kow ; the first syllable should be lengthened. 4. education - should be pronounced as eh-joo-kaye-shuhn and not "eh-doo-kaye-shuhn" 5. colon - should be pronounced as kow-luhn ( the first vowel should be "owe" or "oh"; the first syllable should be lengthened. 6. roll, poll, toll - roll should be pronounced like "role" so it's tootsie role ; poll as pole and not "Paul" ; toll as tOwl and not "tall". 7. gross - should be pronounced like " grows" so it's "grows income" 8. chocolate - should be pronounced as chack-luht ( the second vowel is a neutral vowel, or the schwa); the first syllable is lengthened. 9. cleanliness - first syllable should be pronounced as " klehn and not kleen/clean" ; "eh" is just like how we pronounce the 2nd vowel in our Filipino ALphabet. 10. Thailand - "TH" here is pronounced as "strong t" therefore "h" is silent so correct pronunciation is Tie-laend and not thigh-laend. 11. shepherd - " ph" is with the sound of "p", so " h" is silent; correct pronunciation is sheperd. 12. Stephen- "ph" is with the sound of " v". 13. predicate - correct pronunciation is " preh-duh-kuht" and not "preh-di-kayt"; the first syllable is lengthened. via http://www.symbianize.com/showthread.php?t=93197
