REFLECTION, TRANSLATION, ROTATION

Title of Activity: Reflections, Translations, and Rotations Age/Grade Level: 4th Content Area: Math/Art Objective: The students will understand the difference between reflection, translation, and rotation symmetry. The students will become more comfortable with these three intimidating math terms. After the students have done this, they will partake in a class activity involving these three new terms. IN Standard/Foundation: 4.G.3 Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify linesymmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry. Materials Needed/Media/Technology: Pencils, background sheets, Picture, Scissors, Tracing paper, Scotch tape dispenser, Glue Sticks, ____________________________________________________________ I. MOTIVATION: We will show the student one that is has been traced but not glued yet.

GOAL FOR LEARNER: To identify the three new math terms: reflection, translation, and rotation symmetry. II. PROCEDURE: NEW INFORMATION: Review symmetry Reflection Rotation Translation CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING: We will ask some questions to make sure the students understand the differences between the three different symmetry terms. MODELING: Show on the white board using a drawn grid and two pictures the differences between: rotation, translation, and reflection. GUIDED PRACTICE:

REFLECTION, TRANSLATION, ROTATION Give them a sheet of paper and a picture to draw from. The students will practice for the project ahead of them by drawing pictures they were given.

CHECKING FOR UNDERSTANDING: Walk around the room and check to see the students are drawing their warm-up pictures in preparation for the actual project. PRACTICE: Trace the selected picture three times onto the tracing paper. Cut out each traced image. Perform a reflection, translation, and rotation with each traced image. Glue each traced image in its appropriate position next to one of the original three half selected pictures. ASSESSMENT: The students will present their final product to a small group of students in the class. Students will be graded on the final product. (See attached rubric) CLOSURE: The students will engage in a discussion of the symmetry they witnessed in tracing their chosen images. They will then discuss the differences that they have observed in reflection, rotation, and translation. III. EVALUATION (attached)
