a.) This modulation can be regarded as a common-tone modulation because of the constant c in the upper voice of the piano from the C major chord to the Ab Major chord and the emphasis placed upon this c in the arpeggiation of the left hand in the piano part during the C major measure.

b.) It would be difficult to justify considering this modulation to be a direct modulation. As stated in the supplement, there is no connecting tissue used in a direct modulation, and they are usually abrupt sounding. Mozart uses the cs in the measure before the Ab chord to connect the two, and the change of key sounds very natural when listened to. The change is neither abrupt nor lacks connective tissue.
