CO/PREREQUISITES: Professional Role of the Registered Nurse (sem 1-pre); Research and Evidenced-Based Practice (sem 1-pre); Prevention, Wellness and Health Promotion (sem 1-pre); MedicalSurgical Nursing in the Adult Population (sem 2- pre) COURSE OVERVIEW: This course provides an overview of U.S. healthcare delivery from a systems perspective and across a variety of practice settings. Structural, financial and managerial foundations of integrated healthcare delivery systems are presented. External forces influencing the provision and coordination of services including research evidence, utilization review, case management, contractual commitments, regulatory bodies, payer systems and government agencies are discussed. The impact of informatics and technology on care delivery, management, service provision and workflow is explored. Students will examine nursing roles vital to assuring coordination, integration, and continuity of care by applying appropriate technology enhanced solutions. How healthcare policy and local and federal laws shape both the health care delivery system and patient care services including accessibility, accountability, and affordability is emphasized. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1. Summarize the components of the U.S. health care delivery system. 2. Describe trends in health care delivery, service provision, and reimbursement models influencing care and service delivery. 3. Identify external forces to include health information technology (HIT) initiatives influencing the delivery of patient-centered care across the life span and across care settings. 4. Participate in designing systems that support effective interprofessional teams. 5. Recognize the role of technology in creating a safe care environment, providing decision support, and improving patient outcomes. 6. Explore nurses involvement in design, selection, implementation, and evaluation of technologies to include essential elements and standards needed to support patient care. 7. Analyze a case report for improving patient care addressing political, social, cultural, technical, and legal influences.

TEXTBOOK REQUIREMENTS: Niles, N. J. (2015). Basics of the U.S. health care system (2nd ed.). Burlington, MA: Jones and Bartlett. Readings, web sites, interactive activities as noted in the course. NOTE: Due to the pace of change in informatics content, we will use journal articles and other resources for content. These articles will be available through the library course reserves. Information on how to access these articles are found on the Blackboard site for your section. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students will: Complete assigned readings, view presentations and other resource materials Participate in course discussions and activities Complete an interprofessional group assignment related to the healthcare delivery system Conduct a SWOT analysis of a selected health care environment Complete quizzes based on content presented in course Write a paper on trends in healthcare GRADING: Participation/Discussion Interprofessional Group Assignment Online Quiz 1 Online Quiz 2 Healthcare Trends Paper TOTAL EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated based on: 1. Grading criteria provided for each assignment 2. Quiz grades Students will evaluate the course based on: 1. Discussion and evaluation of individual learning goals and objectives 2. Completion of an online CEQ/FEQ evaluation LATE POLICY GUIDELINE: Assignments are required to be submitted by the date and time indicated in the syllabus. Students will be given a 15-minute grace period after which the assignment is considered late. When this occurs, the grade on the assignment will be reflected in the following way: Papers submitted within 24 hours from the date and time indicated on the syllabus are subject to a 5% reduction of the assignment grade. Papers submitted within 48 hours from the date and time indicated on the syllabus are subject to a 10% reduction of the assignment grade.
