From the icker of an idea to a
pencil sketch, design concepts
are born. A dozen of these con-
cepts, along with the designers
who conceived of them, were
honored recently during the
High Desert Design Councils
(HDDC) second annual design
competition.
Both entrants and award win-
ners during this years com-
petition came from myriad in-
dustries including architects,
graphic designers, craftspeo-
ple and artisans. Their submis-
sions included interior design,
architecture, unique dcor and
innovative items created from
r e p u r p o s e d
materials said
organizers.
There were
some really
modern de-
signs this year,
both in the
archi t ec t ure
categories and
furniture, as
well as some
cleverly done
lighting and
recycled furni-
ture pieces, said Mindy Lyman,
interior designer with Pinnacle
Architecture and HDDC Secre-
tary and Design Competition
Committee Chair.
Based in Bend, HDDC is a
nonprot business associa-
tion founded with a mission
to support and
promote the
growth and
success of Cen-
tral Oregons
applied and
decorative arts
c o mmu n i t y.
The group is
made up of
people who
spend much of
their waking
hours taking
their ideas and
turning them
into fruition
through beau-
tiful design
and function.
Ac c o r d i n g
to Lyman, the
HDDCs design
c ompe t i t i on
was organized
to be a signa-
ture event rec-
ognizing the
creative and
talented design professionals
we have in Central Oregon.
This years awards event was
held on Friday, Nov. 1.
Local professionals from a va-
riety of disciplines were invited
to judge the competition, and 13
categories were awarded. Dur-
ing the award
ceremony, a
peoples choice
award decided
by public at-
tendees was
presented as
well.
According to
Lyman, mem-
bers of the
HDDC design
compet i t i on
c o m m i t t e e
were pleased with the growth
of the competition over last
year. Their long-term vision
for the competition is to have
it become a nationwide, indus-
try-recognized and prestigious
event.
So far, we are very pleased
with the amount of participa-
tion and support we have re-
ceived, Lyman said. We hope
to continue growing, and may-
be in the future, the competition
could become a nationally rec-
ognized Central Oregon event
drawing attention from outside
the area to our community and
recognizing the wealth of tal-
ent we have here.
The High Desert Design Council recognizes Central Oregons most
innovative designs during its annual design competition.
