Welcome to Mr. Milius U.S. History Class!

2013-2014
Course Focus: Preparation for High School Social Studies classes Preparation for CST California Standards Test in May Mastery of the History 8th Grade Common Core Standards Units to include: 1. The American Colonies 2. American Revolution 3. A New Nation and the Constitution 4. The American Political System 5. U.S. Foreign Policy 6. The Northeast Goals: By the end of the year Students will have acquired the necessary skills to be successful in High School Social Studies reading and writing. Students will complete different types of assignments (e.g. essays, presentations, hands-on projects, creative writing, vocabulary development, word processing, etc.) to show their knowledge of each of the units of study this year. Students will solidify fundamental skills such as composing paragraphs, reading comprehension, analyzing primary and secondary source documents, making predictions, giving presentations, and working collaboratively. Students will show mastery of History content through various assessments (e.g. tests, projects, compositions, and presentations). Students will have mastered the following technologies and software to develop their Historical academic skills: Apple iPads, MacBooks, Edmodo.com, Achieve 3000, Microsoft Word, Google Drive, and many others. 7. Expectations: I expect you to abide by the Student Compact of CRMA#5. I expect you to respect yourself, your peers, and everyone else at school. I expect you to be on time and prepared for class every day. I expect you to work hard and complete all of your assignments. I expect you to make up all assignments for when you are absent from class.

I encourage you to come to me with questions about missed work, or anything else you want to talk about.

Citizenship: Each student will be an active participant in our classroom community. Everyone is responsible for maintaining the safety of our classroom. Students will demonstrate and exemplify the CRMA #5 ESLRs. All students will have the chance to have their voices heard and the more discussion we have together, the better! Standard Procedures: 1) Be in your seat with all of your materials out by the start of the period. 2) Complete the Do Now, and then write your homework and objectives in your agenda. 3) Turn in last nights homework. Grading and Homework: Your grade in History is comprised of California Standards-Based assessments: o Final, or summative, assessments (e.g. tests, projects, compositions, presentations). o Interim/Informal, or formative assessments (including class activities, quizzes, study sessions). The purpose of homework is: o To enable you to practice the skills that you learn in class. o To practice the skills in which you are not yet proficient or advanced. You must complete all assignments in this class, including every homework assignment, and actively learn the content standards, in order to earn a proficient or advanced grade.
