Pre-Lab Vocabulary: Musculoskeletal System: is an organ system that gives humans (and many animal species) the ability to move using the muscular and skeletal systems. The musculoskeletal system provides form, support, stability, and movement to the body. Tendon: connective tissue that connects muscle to bone. Ligament: connective tissue that connects bone to other bones. Cartilage: connective tissue found in many areas in the bodies of animals, including the joints between bones, the rib cage, the ear, the nose, the bronchial tubes and the intervertebral discs. It is not as hard and rigid as bone but is stiffer and less flexible than muscle. Lab Goals: I will be able to identify different parts of a chicken wing and compare the similarities to the human arm structures. I will be able to identify and describe functions of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage in a dissection lab.

The Dissection 1. Remove the chicken wing skin using the forceps and scissors. Follow Mr. Kubiaks instructions from his demonstration. 2. Once all, or most, of the skin is removed observe the muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, and cartilage. Muscle is the meaty pink tissue that attaches to the bones to promote movement. Tendons are the shiny strips of tissue that connect muscles to bones. Ligaments are connective tissue that connects bones to other bones. Blood vessels are tiny tubular stinglike tissues that carry blood and nutrients to muscles and other organs of the animal. Cartilage is rubbery-like tissue that is found at the ends of bones or in joints where bones meet. Cartilage prevents bone from rubbing against other the bone they interact with.

3. Use your fingers to pull on tendons individually. When muscles contract, they pull on tendons, so when you pull on a tendon, you are modeling the action of a wing muscle. Try to get a part of your chicken wing to wave back and forth by pulling on tendons attached to two opposing muscles. 4. Next, cut through the muscles until one of the chickens lower wing bones is clearly visible. Break the bone with your fingers. Notice how resistant the bone was to bending. Examine the inside of the chicken bone with a toothpick to explore the texture of the center of the bone, the marrow. This is where blood cells are made. 5. The dissection is complete. Mr. Kubiak will be making his way around the class to initial your Today I was able to. sheets. 6. Listen to Mr. Kubiaks detailed instructions for clean up.
