Length: 78 minutes Objectives: F. I want my students to learn about the expressed powers of money and commerce. Students will be able to: 1. Summarize key points relating to Congresss power to tax. 2. Describe how Congress uses its power to borrow money. 3. Analyze the importance of Congresss commerce power. 4. Identify the reasons that the Framers gave Congress the power to issue currency. 5. Explain how the bankruptcy power works. G. I want my students to learn about other expressed powers. Students will be able to: 1. Identify the key sources of Congresss foreign relations powers. 2. Describe the power-sharing arrangement between Congress and the President on the issues of war and national defense. 3. List other key powers exercised by Congress. Standards: Identify constitutional provisions of the legislative branch of the government of the United States. I. Congressional Powers A. Commerce Power B. Currency Power C. Other Expressed Powers D. Foreign Relations Power E. Activity on Congressional Powers Pre-Class preparation: A. Materials needed 1. Computer 2. PowerPoint program 3. Projector 4. Textbook/ portfolio B. Set-up 1. Projector 2. PowerPoint presentation ( opened to first slide) II. Instructional Procedures: A. On task activity, discussion question. (15 minutes) B. Notes on Congressional Powers. (25 minutes) C. Senate simulation. (20 minutes) D. Start work on concept map for Congressional Powers. (15 minutes) III. Evaluation: 1. Students responses to understanding the Congressional Powers. 2. Students comprehension of terminology. 3. Students ability to distinguish between Expressed and Implied Powers. 4. Students will able to accurately explain Congressional Powers. IV. Self-evaluation: 1. Were the objectives met and do the students know the material? 2. Did the students successfully identify key terms and concepts? 3. Were the presentations informative and successful in relaying information?

Instructional Procedures include lecture and discussion concerning the National Legislature. This lecture/ discussion will include the topics of the bicameral Congress, the House of Representatives, the terms and membership of the House of Representatives. After lecture, students will break up into small groups and work on handout.
