Module 3 It truly amazes me to know that many people ignore the fact that social interaction is a key component for a childs development. From developmental perspective social interaction promotes learning because it encourages students to re-evaluate their own views of the world. (Kauchak and Eggen,2012, p.209)Social interaction helps students learn to share, respect and value different cultures, different morals and values. Most of the interaction in a classroom is between the teacher and the students. It is also important to take in to consideration that the students need to learn to interact effectively in a structured and valued environment. There are many skills and strategies that need to be learned and implemented to make students interaction as effective as possible. Effective use of group work requires careful planning and organization to ensure that the task and the interactions contribute to learning. There are also many factors that have to be taken into consideration before making groups, each child has to be taken in to consideration as the individual that they are. Because of typical interaction patterns in crowded classrooms, quiet or less confident students often fail to stay involved Group work is one strategy that you can use to promote the participation of all students.(Kauchak and Eggen,2012, p.212) There are small groups, pair groups, and large groups. All of these will work effectively if they are implemented correctly considering all of the strategies and skills to form the groups. Classroom structure and classroom management also interfere with group work. One of the teaching strategies that I think will work most effectively is direct instruction strategy, is a teaching strategy in which the teacher presents well-defined knowledge and skills and explicitly guides the learning process. (249) This strategy has four main characteristics in

which it focuses on which are : goal oriented, focused and aligned, teacher scaffolding and opportunities for practice and feedback. This teaching strategy is supported by research as being one of the most effective teaching strategies. Direct instruction focuses on two main contents that are central to curriculum; these two are skills and concepts. When using direct instruction its important to have clear and specific learning objectives, identify previous knowledge and to have examples or problems to practice the new learning. Group work also highly helps and benefits the students. These social interactions skills not only provide opportunities to practice skills, but also to help develop social interaction skills in the process. (Kauchak and Eggen,2012, p.260) These wore the most important topics that stood out to me; I believe social interaction is highly effective and beneficial for the students development. As Ive been observing, I start to notice the different methods and strategies that teachers are using. Ive noticed that the teacher I am observing beliefs social interaction is highly important, for all the activities she does she first lets them share with their partners and then with their table before they share with the class. She always restates their objective through the lesson, like in direct instruction. She makes it very clear to them what the goal is for the lesson or activity that they are doing.
