I.1 Distributive Property The distributive property is used when someone is multiplying a small number by a big number, like 5 x 95. Instead of multiplying 95 by 5, you can split it into two smaller equations, like this: (5 x 90) + (5 x 5). If you find the answer for each of the problems in the equation and add them together, youll get the same answer as if you didnt use the distributive property. (Answer: 5 x 95 or (5 x 90) + (5 x 5) = 475)

I.2 Associative property of Addition/Multiplication The associative property is used only in multiplication and division. It is used to reposition parentheses in an equation like this one: 5 + (9 8). If I were to use the associative property on this problem, I would move the parentheses around different numbers, like this: (5 + 9) 8. I just used the associative property to help make the problem easier without moving the numbers.

I.3 Commutative property of Addition/Multiplication

The commutative property is used to move the numbers in an equation. In an equation like, 4 x 7 x 5, you might want to make the problem easier. To do that, you would switch the 7 and the 5, you would be using the commutative property of multiplication, 4 x 5 x 7.

II. Steps For Simplifying 4(7x 3) + 2x 1. Use the distributive property on 4(7x 3). 4x7x=28x, 4x3=12. Now the equation is 28x-12+2x

2. Now, highlight the like terms the same color. 28x12+2x 3. Finally, add the like terms. 28x+2x=30x, -12+0=-12 Now the equation is fully simplified to 30x - 12.
Answer

III. Steps For Solving 7x 10 9x = -13 1. Combine like terms. 7x-9x=-2x Now the equation is -2x-10=-13 2. Add 10 to both sides. -10+10=0, -13+10=-3 Now the equation is -2x=-3

3. Finally, divide both sides by -2. -2/-2, -3/-2=1.5

All that is left is x = 1.5.

Answer

IV. Steps For Solving 5x/6 + x/3 1/2 = 11/6 1. Find a common denominator and take away the denominator. The new equation is 5x+2x-3=11

2. Combine like terms. 5x+2x=7x The new equation is 7x-3=11 3. Add three to both sides. -3+3=0, 11+3=14 The new equation is 7x=14 4. Divide both sides by 7. 7/7, 14/7=2 All that is x=2 V. The steps to solve and graph 2 < or = x/-5 1. Treat the problem like a one step equation. Multiply both sides by -5 and flip the sign. -5x-5, 2x-5=-10 10>or=x 2. To graph x<or=-10, you need a line with a marked 0 and -10. The new equation is Answer Answer

left is

-10

3. Finally, to mark that -10 is a part of the solution set, place a filled in circle above -10. Then draw a ray pointing to the left.
Answer

-10

VI. Steps For Solving And Graphing -4x + 4 >or= -8 1. Treat this problem like a two-step equation. Subtract 4 from both sides. 4-4, -8-4=-12 The new equation is 4x>or=-12. 2. Divide both sides by 4. 4/4, -12/4=-3 The new equation is x>or=-3. 3. To graph x>or=-3, you need a line with a marked 0 and -3. Finally, to mark that -3 is a part of the solution set, place a filled in circle above -3. Then draw a ray pointing to the left.
Answer

-3

VII. Closed and Opened Circles In Graph Inequalities When graph inequalities, an open circle above a number means that the number is not apart of the solution set. A closed circle means that the number below is a part of the solution set. An opened circle is equivalent to < or > because the number below would not be a part of the answer. A closed circle would be equivalent to or because the number below is a part of the answer.

VIII. Solve These Three Word Problems 1. Chris wants to buy a bicycle that costs $160. If she saves $12 dollars a week, what is the fewest number of weeks she must save in order to buy the bicycle?

2. Mark worked on math homework less than 1/3 the amount of time that his brother did. If Mark spent 25 minutes on math homework, how much time did his brother spend on his math homework.
