Types of Properties Distributive Property: The distributive property allows us to multiply values using a combination of multiplication and addition.

Example: 6(x + 4) Associative Property of Addition: The associative property states that we can add a group of three real numbers by starting with either the first two values or we can start with the last two numbers Example: (8 + 7) +3 = (3 + 7) + 8 Associative Property of Multiplication: The associative property states that we can multiply a group of three real numbers by starting with either the first two values or we can start with the last two numbers Example: (7 x 3) x 2 = 7 x (3 x 2) Commutative Property of Addition: The commutative property states that we can add two real numbers in any order. Example: 5 + 7 = 7 + 5 Commutative Property of Multiplication: The commutative property states that we can multiply two real numbers in any order. Example: 2 x 4 = 4 x 2

Simplifying Expressions
Example: 4(7x -3) + 2x

Step 1) Distribute 4(7x -3)

4(7x -3) 28x -3

Step 2) Combine Like Terms + 2x - 2x 28x -3 + 2x 30x - 3

Solving Equations
Examples: 7x - 10 -9x = -13 and 5x + x - 1 = 11 6 3 2 6

Problem 1) 7x - 10 -9x = -13

Step 1) Combine Like Terms 7x - 10 -9x = -13 -2x - 10 = -13 Step 2) Add 10 to each side of the equation +10 +10 -2x - 10 = -13 -2x = -3 Step 3) Isolate the variable by dividing each side by -2 -2x = -3 -2 -2 x = 1 1/2 Problem 1) 5x + x - 1 = 11 6 3 2 6 Step 1) Divide each denominator by 6

6 (5x + x - 1) = (11) 6 (6 3 2) (6) 5x + 2x - 3 = 11 Step 2) Combine Like Terms 5x + 2x - 3 = 11 7x - 3 = 11

Step 3) Add 3 to each side of the equation +3 +3 7x - 3 = 11 7x = 14 Step 3) Isolate the variable by dividing each side by 7

7x = 14 7 7 x=2

Solving and Graphing Inequalities

Examples: 2 < x and -4x + 4 > -8 -5 Problem 1) 2 < x -5 Step 1) Isolate the variable by multiplying each side by 5 (5) 2 < x (5) -5 10 < x x > 10 Step 2) Graph x > 10

Problem 2) -4x + 4 > -8 Step 1) Isolate the variable by subtracting each side by 4 - 4 -4 -4x + 4 > -8 Step 2) Isolate the variable by dividing each side by -4 -4x > -12 -4 -4 x < -3 Step 3) Graph x < -3

Open and Closed Circled Graphing

Open Circles: They represent that the inequality sign is either > or <

Closed Circles: They represent that the inequality sign is either > or < Word Problems Problem 1) Chris wants to buy a bicycle that cost $160. If she saves $12 each week, what is the fewest number of weeks she must save in order to buy the bicycle?

160 < 12x 12 12 x < 13.3 weeks

Problem 2) Mark worked on math homework less than 1/3 the amount of time that his brother did. If Mark spent 25 minutes on his math homework, how much time did his brother spend on his math homework? (3) 25 < 1/3x 1/3 x < 75 minutes

Problem 3) One third of a number, decreased by thirty-six is at most twentytwo. Find the number. +36 +36 1/3x - 36 < 22 1/3x < 58 (3) 1/3 x < 174
