Common Core/ NM Content Standards: Reading Standards for Literature Grades 9-10: Craft and Structure determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text including figurative language. RI.9-10.1 Support analysis of what the text says explicitly and infer meaning from implicit ideas. Writing Standards: Literacy W.9-10.2a Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts and information to make important connections. Literacy.W.9-10.2b Develop the topic with concrete details and quotations. Literacy.W.9-10.2e Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone. Literacy W.9-10.2f Provide a concluding statement

Other considerations (modifications, accommodations, acceleration, etc.): What are effective strategies for reading Literature and informational texts?

Connections (prior learning/prior knowledge): Students have listened to chapters 1-7 of the Kite Runner and have answered questions that require them to identify main ideas, themes, conflicts, character motivations and symbols used in the story. Students have also completed a worksheet that had them identify various ways to elaborate ideas in a paragraph including using details, anecdotes and quotes. Students also received a graphic organizer and rubric for writing an expository essay about a conflict in the Kite Runner. Resources/Materials Teacher:

Students: Kite Runner, Articles from Time Magazine, Vocab Worksheets from Building Vocabulary Skills Assessment (How will you monitor progress and know students have successfully met outcomes?) Daily: Do Now checks for understanding of the previous days lesson. Written assignments and quizzes check for understanding of daily lessons. This Week: Answering questions about the Kite Runner, taking a quiz; Students will complete an essay exploring complex relationships between characters.

For Informational Texts: Answering questions about a news article that requires information that is explicit and information that must be inferred. Also, students must summarize main ideas and supporting details and write them down. Students will fill out reading packet that focuses on vocabulary, comprehension, inferring information, identifying and summarizing main ideas and supporting details. Unit: Reading Comprehension for fiction and informational texts

Time allotted MONDAY Learning Target- Students will demonstrate their understanding of a strategy to develop topic sentences by turn questions into topic sentences. Students will demonstrate their understanding of how to write an expository essay about complex conflicts between characters in a novel by writing one in class.

Lesson activities for instructor and students Assignment(s) DueStudents will complete worksheet turning questions into topic sentences. Students work on their essays.

TUESDAY Learning Target- Students will demonstrate their understanding of how to identify main ideas and draw inferences from implicit ideas by answering questions about a chapter in the Kite Runner.

Assignment(s) DueQuiz on Chapter 8.

WEDNESDAY Learning TargetStudents will demonstrate a strategy for finding main ideas by asking questions by writing a question for every paragraph they read in an informational article. THURSDAY Learning TargetStudents will demonstrate their understanding of academic language by taking a quiz on unit one in building vocabulary skills.

Assignment(s) DueStudents will read articles from Time Magazine and write questions that address the main ideas in paragraphs or in the article as a whole. Then students will give their questions to other students to answer. Assignment(s) DueQuiz

FRIDAY Learning TargetStudents will demonstrate their understanding of how to identify main ideas and draw inferences from implicit ideas by answering questions about a chapter in the Kite Runner.
