Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1. Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder
A. Procedure -Get a teaspoon of aluminum powder -Weigh the mass of beaker -Put teaspoon into the beaker -Mass the measurements and record -Use conversion factors to solve the problem. B. Initial mass of beaker: 29.244 g Mass of beaker with aluminium powder: 35.305 g Mass of aluminium powder: 35.305 g - 29.244 g = 6.061 g Molar mass of aluminium: 26.981 g C. Mass -> Moles -> atoms 6.061g=(1mole/26.981g) (6.022*10^23atoms/moles) Calculation on calculator= 1.35278 * 10^23atoms Significant digits: 1.353 * 10^23atoms

Concluding Statement: In conclusion, 1.353 * 1023atoms are in 6.061g of aluminum powder. 2. Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder omit See number 3 A. Procedure -Find the molar mass of iron -Convert from Mol of iron powder to teaspoons of iron -Find the weight of one teapsoon B. Collect data necessary to do the unit conversions Molar mass of iron: 55.845g C. Moles -> teaspoons 1.00 mol of iron powder= (55.845g /1 mol of Iron) (1 teaspoon of iron powder/1 gram of iron powder) Concluding statement:

3. Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper. A. Procedure. -Measure the length of copper wire -Mass copper wire -Find molar mass of copper -Convert and find the length. B.
Mass of copper wire: 1.871 g Length of copper wire: 10.15 cm Molar mass of copper: 63.546 g

B. 1.871g = 1mol/63.546g =the amount of moles of copper 0.29443 moles of copper in 10.15cm 1.871g x (1molCu/63.546g)=0.02954 moles of copper in 10.15 cm of wire 2.00 molCu x (10.15cm/0.029)= 700. cm of copper wire Concluding statement: There is 700 cm of copper wire in 2 moles of copper

Concluding Statement: You need 700cm of copper in order to get 2.00 mol of copper Photos: Teaspoon of aluminum powder within the beaker: Copper wire massed:
