PERSONAL & SEASON BEST: 1:46.17, Eugene, Oregon
Ryan finished third in the USA Outdoor Championships in late June, finishing behind national champion Nick
Symmonds and Khadevis Robinson.
He enters the world championships with a personal best of 1:46.17 set in Eugene on June 6th at the Oregon Track Club
minimeet the night before the Nike Prefontaine Classic. Has raced very sparingly since the national championships,
competing in Karlstad, Sweden over 1000 meters, setting a personal best of 2:21.83 on July 23rd.

THIS SEASON: 2168 in Chula Vista, California
Mart, who competed for the Huskies in two meets in 2007 before being declared ineligible due to credits transferring
from Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia, was selected by his country’s federation for his second world
championship team.
He enters the World Championships with a personal best of 2184, set in Sweden last year, and a season best of 2168,
set in May at the Chula Vista throwers meet in California. In Osaka two years ago, Israel threw 1977 in the qualifying
round. Currently trains in Estonia with a group of throwers that include the reigning world discus champion Gerd
Kanter.

THIS SEASON: 1500m3:32.56 in Tanger, Morocco; 5000m13:03.06 in New York City
Lagat enters the meet as the reigning world champion at both 1500 and 5000 meters. By winning both events two years
ago, he only had to participate in the USA championships to officially claim his spot on Team USA, running one round
of the 800.
The Washington State grad, who resides in Tuscon, will potentially race 14,500 meters over five races in Berlin, much
as he did two years ago in becoming the first man to win the 1500/5000 double at the world championships.

PERSONAL & SEASON BEST: 20910 in Eugene, Oregon
Patterson won her second straight USA championship in the javelin in Eugene, Oregon in late June, throwing a personal
best of 20910.
After the USA championships, Patterson finished ninth at the Aviva Grand Prix meet in London on July 25th with a
throw of 1779, and eighth in Leverkusen, Germany on August 1st, throwing 1746. Finished her college career at
Purdue University with a second place finish in the NCAA championships. Signed a contract with Asics after the USA
Championships.

DIANA PICKLER

PERSONAL & SEASON BEST: 6,271 points in Eugene, Oregon, 2008
Diana used a strong long jump mark of 207 to propel her to her first USA national championship in late June, scoring a
personal best of 6271 to top her previous PR of 6257, set at last year’s Olympic Trials.
Pickler did not finish the heptathlon competition at last year’s Olympics in Beijing, after injuring a hamstring in the first
event, the 100 hurdles. Diana, who finished 25th in the world championships in 2007 with a score of 5838, finished her
storied WSU career (200207) with a second place finish in the USA championships, after finishing 25th in the NCAA
championships two weeks earlier, thanks to a disqualification in the 200 meters for a lane violation. She won her
second USA indoor pentathlon title in March, scoring 4391 points. Competed in three heptathlon events at the Thorpe
Cup in Marburg, Germany on August 8th & 9th, running 13.61 in the 100 hurdles, long jumped 1911 3/4 & threw the
javelin 1506.

PERSONAL BEST: 12.45, 2007 in New York City
SEASON BEST: 12.64 in Stockholm, Sweden
After an injury filled 2008 season, Powell earned her third straight world championship team
berth by finishing second in the 100 meter hurdles, running a windaided 12.47 to finish behind Dawn Harper, who ran
12.36 for the win.
In her two previous appearances at the world championships, she finished sixth in the semifinals of the 2005 meet in
Helsinki, and was fifth in 2007 in Osaka. Has been a regular on most of the top European meets this season, competing
in Paris, Stockholm, Rome, Monte Carlo, and Lausanne.

Rome earned his third consecutive world championship team berth with his runnerup finish at the USA championships
in June, throwing 2083.
In his two previous world championship appearances, Jarred finished seventh in Helsinki, throwing 2108, and was
eighth in his flight (not making the finals) in Osaka. This summer, he won the discus competition at Tangier, Morocco,
and was third in Lucerne, Switzerland .

ARETHA THURMOND

PERSONAL BEST: 2161 in Marietta, Georgia, 2004
SEASON BEST: 2051 in Eugene, Oregon
The 32year University of Washington graduate earned yet another spot on the world championship team in finishing
second at the USA championships with a season best of 2051. Thurmond won the 2008 Olympic Trials, and finished
sixth in the 2007 USA championships less than three weeks after giving birth to son Theo. Thurmond has been among
the most consistent American throwers for the last 10 years, winning five national championships.
Thurmond made her first major international final in finishing tenth at the Olympics in Beijing with a mark of 1962. Is
a member of USA Track & Field’s newly reconstituted board of directors.

BRAD WALKER

SEASON BEST: 190 1/4 in Monte Carlo, Monaco
Walker, who won the national title earlier this summer, enters the meet as the 2007 world outdoor champion.
Walker has laid low this season, opening 2009 with the victory at the national championships, and competing very
sparingly with appearances in London and Monte Carlo, no heighting in London. He enters the world championship
with an injury reported by both Track & Field News and polevaultpower.com when he landed in the vault box while
attempting 193 1/2 in Monte Carlo.

PERSONAL BEST: 2261, 2006 in Salinas, California
SEASON BEST: 2116 in Chula Vista, California
Waltz earned another world championship team berth with a third place finish at the USA Championship in Eugene,
throwing 2031.
In 2005, the former twotime Pacific10 Conference discus champion finished fifth in the world championships in
Helsinki, Finland, throwing 21010. In 2008, Waltz got engaged to 2000 Olympic pole vault champion and former
world record holder Stacy Dragila. The 2000 Washington State grad was a prep standout at Port Falls HS in Idaho,
Waltz earned four track letters and three letters as a fullback and defensive end in football. As a senior he was the state
champion in the shot put and discus. His first name is pronounced “Eyeann”.
