CARBON
COMPOUND

ORGANIC

SATURATED
- Alkane, CnH2n+2
- Alcohol, CnH2n+1
- Carboxylic acid, CnH2n+1COOH
- Ester, R1COOR2 or CnH2nO2

______________________

- Alkene, CnH2n

2. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons. It only undergo 2 type of reactions:

(a) (i) combustion completely
2C2H6 (g) + 7O2 (g) ..(1m)
(ii) combustion incompletely
2C2H6 (g) + 3O2 (g) ..(1m)
Or
2C2H6 (g) + 5O2 (g) ..(1m)
(b) Substitution reaction. When mixture of methane gas and chlorine gas is exposed to
ultraviolet light, a series of substitution reactions take place.
Step 1: CH4 (g) + Cl2 (g) CH3Cl (g) + HCl (g)
Step 2: (1m)
Step 3:.(1m)

Step 4: (1m)
3. Draw the structural formula and state the name for each product.

(a) Alkene (6m)

(b) Alcohol (5m)

(c) Carboxylic acid (4m)

(d) Ester (5m)

4. Isomerism
(a) Phenomenon of the ability of carbon atoms to form branched chains.
(b) These molecules have same (1m) but different
.. (1m) (isomers).
(c) Isomers only differ in the arrangement of the atoms, producing straight-chain &
branched-chain molecules.

5. Preventing latex from coagulation

- By adding the NH4 solution
-

NH4 is an alkali (-OH) that will neutralise the H+ ion from the lactic acid (bacteria) in
the latex.

Thus, the ve charged remain on the rubber particles. Furthermore, the growth of
bacteria is obstructed. Hence, the coagulation of latex does not occur.
