Collaborative Unit on Digital Citizenship Reflection Our digital citizenship unit involved a target audience of 4th graders.

We chose to focus the unit on digital etiquette. It was difficult narrowing down a topic to just one lesson. We had a hard time narrowing down our topic, because there are so many areas that we can teach within this topic of digital etiquette and citizenship. I thought the digital etiquette topic would be best considering the age of our students and a recent experience that I had with them in CIED 7603. I discussed with my collaborating teacher about the online module that I taught in CIED 7603 and what I had learned from it. My students in the class were 4th graders, and it was very clear that they needed instruction on digital etiquette. As a matter of fact, that is something I should have done before implementing the module in CIED 7603. When the students began their work for the course in CIED 7603, they would type in the discussion forum with disrespect to one another and would type in all caps. After speaking with the other teacher about this, she was clearly on board with our unit on digital etiquette. We began by breaking down the term. We thought if they understand the term etiquette first, then it would help them better understand when we began discussing digital etiquette. We believe this worked quite well for the students understanding. Our goal was to make it interactive for the students. We wanted to ensure that we included multiple means of representation, so this way the interactive aspect helped reach the kinesthetic learners. In addition, we included our own narrative PowerPoint, again including multiple means of representation for visual and auditory learners. Through our multiple means of representation, we also sought to include multiple means of engagement. We used Brainpop, various images, a narrated PowerPoint, and so forth as previously mentioned. This helped to hold the students interest and to motivate them to continue through the lesson. We did have difficulty with Brainpop. We tried to embed Brainpop into the PowerPoint. I was unable to do so. I used a Web 2.0 screencast tool and recorded the Brainpop video as a screencast to put on the website, however. I was happy to find this workaround. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in my struggles with not being able to embed the Brainpop video. I do plan to research this further and see where I went wrong. Maybe it cannot be done, but it does seem like you should be able to embed the video. In regards to assessment, we included multiple means of expression. Students had three choices to demonstrate what they learned in the lesson on digital etiquette. This is yet another aspect of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). This is one area we struggled with, because it is online. It is easy to have them take an online quiz, which populate the results and sends it to us via email. However, even in an online course, students should still have multiple means of expression when it comes to assessment. We also wondered if students would choose the easy version of choosing the quiz and avoiding the last two choices, which would take extended time. This is an area I definitely need to work on.

Pre-Assessment Data For the pre-assessment, students were to answer the following short-answer questions: 1) 2) 3) 4) What is etiquette? What is digital etiquette? Why is digital etiquette important? What is an example of digital etiquette?

Pre-Assessment Results - % by class who answered question correctly Q2 Q3 Q4 Q1 0% 0% 0% 15%

The result of my pre-assessment reveals that my 4th grade class did not have previous knowledge of digital etiquette. Only 15% of the students could explain what etiquette means. None of the students were able to correctly answer questions 2-4. Assessment Data All students elected to complete the BrainPop video quiz. However, three students also wanted to complete the projects during extra time. For the purposes of evaluating the success of this unit, I am using data from the BrainPop video quiz. Evaluation of Assessment Results Overall, our collaboration was a success. It was not without struggles, especially with trying to get our schedules together. We were very happy with the results of the assessments. The assessments clearly show that our students learned about digital etiquette and its importance from this unit. I do believe this is something that should be integrated in our lesson plans, and now I already have this set up for next year. Of course, there are some things that I will need to tweak. I would like to add more resources.

I would like to add this to my classroom website also. I would to find some better games than I found that give more real life practice. I also feel that I could do a better job in reorganizing parts of it where the students can better navigate the website. We live in a poor community, and some students are not familiar with computers at all, so these particular struggled. I also would like to have them upload the documents or quizzes differently instead having them email to me. I could use Google Docs or online assessment that they could go to. I would like to continue to learn more about what is available online to improve this digital citizenship unit.
