Name of Activity: Rattle

Age Group: 0-18 months

Curriculum KDIs: Cognitive development #35 cause and effect children repeat an action to make something happen again, experience cause and effect.

Beginning: Introduce the infants to the rattle and then begin to shake it and then offer it to the infant, while talking about what you are doing and the relationship between the sound.

Middle: The infants will learn to shake the rattle to make noise: use the velcro bracelet if infants are having difficulty holding rattle.
Extensions: Help the infant explore the rattle while manipulating it so he or she can see how it works.

End: Remind the children that its 5 more minutes until clean up for lunch.

Follow UP: Use different materials that make noise or make one from scratch.

Name of Activity: Telephone Age Group: 0-18 months

Originating Idea: To increase language and communication skills: and to increase social awareness.

Materials Needed: 2 telephones Curriculum KDIs: Communication/Language #18 two-way communication children participate in two way communication. Beginning: Gather the children in a small group and begin to make phone noises ring, ring . Pick up the phone, hold it to your ear, and say hello, oh its for and hand the phone to the toddler and encourage a conversation.

Middle: Encourage two or three children to talk on the pretend telephones to each other and call someone they know.

Extensions: The infant will learn how to interact with another child or adult using a pretend telephone.

End: Remind the children that its 5 more minutes until clean up for snack time.

Follow Up: get more phones and have four kids talk at the same time.

Name of Activity: Family Hide and Seek Age Group: 0-18 months

Originating Idea: To help infants understand object permanence, that an object will be there even when something is covering it. Materials Needed: Individual photos of the children with their families mounted on a large board. A cover made of velcro or another material that will keep the pictures covered. Curriculum KDIs: Social/Emotional #4 distinguishing self and others. Beginning: Introduce the infants to the board and engage each child to lift and find a picture of him or herself with there family members.

Middle: Infants will gradually learn that they are separate beings and gain a sense that they belong to a family.
Extensions: Discuss any differences in appearances that the children might observe and encourage trail and error experimentation as the infants discovers screens that need lifting from top to bottom. End: Tell the children they have 5 more minutes until outside time.

Follow Up: Laminate pictures of children of different racial or cultural backgrounds doing caries of things with their families and tape them around the wall so the children will see them while crawling or walking around.

Name of Activity: Cleaning House Age Group: 18-36 months

Originating Idea: To increase social awareness and increase language and communication skills that will also help sensory motor skills. Materials Needed: Toy vacuum, broom, dust cloth, sponge, dustpan Curriculum KDIs: Approaches to Learning #2 Problem solving Beginning: Round the children together and encourage them to work together with the broom and dustpan while telling them about cleaning and how everyone is helping clean up the room. Middle: Demonstrate how different cleaning tools work and help the children use the materials. Encourage the children to imitate each other. Extensions: Talk about the health and safety aspect of cleaning up and how someone could get hurt of they fall on a toy if its not in its correct place. End: Tell the children to place the materials in the place that they belong and get ready for the next activity. Follow up: Have the children do the same steps again in two weeks to give practice.

Originating Ideas: To increase creative development skills, the children were taking their shoes on and off and switching with each other so we added this activity.

Name of Activity: Dress Up Age Group: 18-36 months Lesson Guide Planning

Materials Needed: Hats, shoes, shirts, blouses, skirts, dresses, pants, jackets, scarves, ties. Curriculum KDIs: Creative arts # 36 imitating and pretending. Beginning: Encourage the toddlers to dress up in the clothing. Talk with the toddlers about where they might be going in different outfits.

Middle: As toddlers become more competent encourage them to play together with complementary roles.

Extensions: Focus on the self help aspect of the play and encourage toddlers to switch clothing, while supporting their initial attempts to pretend play.

End: Tell the children to start to put away the materials in the right place and get ready lunch time in five minutes.

Follow Ups: Add different materials to the housing area for play next time.

Name of Activity: Hickory Dickory Dock Age Group: 18- 36 months Lesson Guide Planning

Beginning: Explain to the children that were going to play a rhyming game about a mouse while using our hands.

Middle: Read the rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock to the children, have the children make a beat while reciting the rhyme. Have the children wiggle their fingers toward the ceiling when you say the mouse ran up the clock. When the mouse ran back sown the clock have them wiggle their fingers back down to there lap.

Extensions: After saying the rhyme and doing the finger plays a few times till the children about another game using words that start with other letter sounds.

End: Sing the clean up song and transition into the next activity.

Follow Ups: Add Hickory Dickory Dock to the class song book. Put a clock or timer in the classroom.

Beginning: Start by encouraging the infants to grab for the socks after you hold them up and say here are your socks, where are we going to put them. Holding up the socks in child reach.

Middle: Show the infants where the socks go place one on one foot and leave the other one off.

Extensions: Let the infants hold the sock and see if he or she tries to put it on there own foot.
End: Put the socks back on the children and transition to a new activities, while singing a song that leads into the activities.

Name of Activity: Lava Lamps for Infants Age Group: 0-18 months Lesson Guide Planning

Originating Ideas: To help provide the infants an opportunity to explore colors, shapes, and sounds. The children love the colors on the disco ball in last week activity. Materials Needed: Water bottles filled with vegetable oil and food coloring (10). Wrap the caps in duct tape to make sure that it doesnt spill. Curriculum KDIs: Physical development #13 Moving the whole body #14 Moving with objects. Beginning: Lay out a soft blanket and position the water bottle lava lamps on the blanket. Allow the infants to explore the different lava lamps with their hand and mouths.

Middle: Observe the looks on the children faces while they look at the different colors and shapes that the oil and water creates inside the bottles.

Extensions: Shake the bottles fast then slow to show how the lava moves in different speeds.

End: start to get children ready for bodily care! Follow Ups: Have the older children observe the lava lamps on the next activity.

Name of Activity: Box Trains Age Group: 18-36 months Lesson Guide Planning

Originating Ideas: When playing with box trains, the kids will develop their physical skills , and learn to think critically when they maneuvering the box trains. The kids make choo- choo train noises while in line for outside time. Materials Needed: Boxes with holes in them with yarn holding the boxes together. I.e.. Shoe boxes, sandwich boxes, tissue boxes. Curriculum KDIs: Physical/Development #14 Moving with Objects. Beginning: Introduce the toddlers to the box train and teach him or her about the movement, the sounds , and new words about trains.

Middle: Allow the toddlers time to explore the way he or she wants to use the train. Encouraging the children to move the boxes backwards and forwards. Extensions: As the child starts to push or pull the train begins to introduce sounds and words related to the train. End: Explain that in 5 more minutes will have last snack time while we get ready for our parents to pick us up. Follow Ups: Next time introduce the boxes with small toys that they can load and unload in the boxes.

Extensions: Encourage the children to dump and refill the box to see if they can get a different pictures.

End: start to announce five more minutes until lunch time.

Follow Ups: change the pictures next time to thing that can be found in a household.

Curriculum KDIs: Creative Arts #40 Responding to music Beginning: Place the mobile infant in an upright sitting position facing you. Take his/her hand in yours and begin singing row, row, row, your boat. As you sing, rock back and forth with the infant.

Middle: Place them on your lap with back toward your front. For infants who want more activity row more vigorously and make some variations such row, row, row your boat quickly down the stream ,faster ,faster, faster, now until we catch your dream.

Extensions: The infant awareness of moving there body to the beat and ensures that each child receives one on one nurturing several times a day.

End: End saying 5 more minutes before its time to clean up, sing Twinkle, Twinkle, clean up time. Follow Ups: Do more songs that involve singing with movement.

Beginning: Have children put on smocks and help you cover the table with newspaper. Set the large plastic container of water in the center of the table, and give each child a crepe paper scrap. Encourage children to take turns putting their scrap in the water and stirring it around to see the color of the water change.

Middle: As children experiment with the material, listen for any comparison language they use.

Extensions: Encourage the toddlers to use all open ended materials.

End: As children are cleaning up, talk about the experience theyve just had and proceed to next activities.

Materials Needed: tongue depressors with already glued scarves or ribbons attached (10) cardboard tubes (10)

Beginning: Find an open area and gather the children around. Begin playing music on a radio or CD player. Middle: Instruct the children to move around and pick up a cardboard tube with a scarf attached. Encourage the children to grab one of the balls and bounce it around, toss it in the air, or try to throw it in the bucket. Extensions: Get the children to move around and explore ways in which their bodies can move. Have kids march around in large or small circular motions. End: Next time have the children count the balls as they throw them in the bucket. Follow Ups: Show the children where to place materials for the next time we use them.

Originating Ideas: The children enjoyed listening to Itsy Bitsy Spider at greeting time, this activity will help children label and reenact a range of emotions.

Materials Needed: A decorated piece of construction paper made in the shape of a spider (14) whose face depicts a basic emotion happy, frightened, angry etc.

Curriculum KDIs: Physical development # 12 moving parts of the body #8 Emotions Beginning: Sing Itsy Bitsy Spider as the children perform finger play, moving to the rhyme. Show the different emotions of the spider on at a time and ask the children how the spider feels.

Middle: Have the children make different faces while they sing Itsy Bitsy Spider.

Extensions: Ask the children how their voices would sound if they were to talk like the face on the stick.

End: Have the children sing Itsy Bitsy Spider while creeping and crawling like a spider to the next part of the daily routine.

Originating Ideas: During outside time last week several children wanted to make bigger and funny shapes using bubbles.

Materials Needed: tinfoil pie pans with an inch of dishwashing liquid and water- drinking straws. Curriculum KDIs: Creative arts # 37 Exploring art materials. Beginning: Gather the children in small group and show them the straws and the tin pans and talk about what the bubbles look and feel like and so on.

Middle: Observe the children and encourage them to describe and think about what they seeing and doing. Midway through the activity, introduce the tin cans and talk to the children about the differences in the bubbles that they can make with the tin cans compared to making bubbles with the straws.

Extensions: Encourage children to describe and think about what they seeing and doing.

End: Place a large tub or bucket in the middle of the table, and ask the children to dump their bubbles into the tub. Show the children where the materials can be found at a later time, and ask the children to move like bubbles to the next part of the daily routine.

Follow Ups: Talk about other items that have or produce bubbles, such as shampoo, bubble bath, and laundry detergent, and so on.

Materials Needed: Variety of stickers i.e., fruit, balloons, vehicles toys and mirror Curriculum KDIs: Cognitive development #30 taking apart #32 anticipating events Beginning: Start to motivate the infants attention to get stickers by placing on your nose or for head. Say look at the sticker on my nose can you put one on your nose? Place stickers on infants body parts such as hands, cheeks, toes, knees, etc.

Middle: Observe the childrens growing ability to grasp and pull and put on things. Direct the childrens attention to the mirror, pointing out the reflection of the sticker on the named body part.

Extensions: Help the children reinforce their observations of what they feel their bodies doing. Help make the connection between body parts and self-identify.

End: Remove stickers off the children and place mirror in dramatic play area.

Follow Ups: Use a different kind of stickers and have children place them on a wall board.

Originating Ideas: The infants like the smell of ginger from our Halloween activity.

Name of Activity: Hand/Foot Water Play Age Group: 0/18 months Lesson Guide Planning

Materials Needed: Large and small sponges shaped like hands and feet, in skin tones primary colors- container with 2 inch of water mixed with ginger. Curriculum KDIs: Cognitive development #31 seeing from different viewpoints. Beginning: Gather a small group and place the sponges in the water with the ginger and encourage the infants to manipulate and squeeze the sponges.

Middle: Build the childrens sense of body awareness by labeling all actions and making connections between their hands/feet with the sponges.

Extensions: Comment on the color, texture, and size of the sponges. As the infants bring the sponges up to their mouths, point out the smell.

End: Empty out the water and put away the sponges for the next activity.

Follow Ups: Use a different spice and sponges shaped like animals.
