A. Professional Goals
#1: To maintain classroom management amongst students in between second bell and warm up. Rationale: To maximize the amount of time for students to be active. Reduce the number of risks if equipment is set out. Create a smooth, quick transition from squads to an activity. Assist with set-up if needed. #2: To maintain classroom management amongst students after second bell and before class gets started in Career and Life Management. Rationale: To create a positive learning environment as soon as the second bell rings. Allow the students to reflect on the objectives the previous class. To check for understanding of learning outcomes and have students be accountable for a participation mark.
B. Strategies
Strategies for Goal #1: Put students in squads so they know what is expected of them after they change out. Assigning students to squads will allow for attendance to be taken quicker as well as a chance for them to get to know each others names. Strategies for Goal #2: Have students complete bell work that is posted on the board at the start of every class. Have bell work part of formative assignment to check for understating of objectives. Observe other teachers classroom management techniques. Research what techniques works best for different learning styles.
Indicators of progress for goal #2: Students will take out a piece of paper once second bell has rung and start working on the daily question on the board. At the end of every week they will hand the weekly questions in for a participation mark.
D. Timeline for Completion December 20, 2013 E. Summary of Growth and Goals Achieved
Throughout the semester I worked very hard on achieving my goals. Students were expected to change out for P.E and then go and sit in their squads. This took about a week to get the hang of and then it became second nature for them. This took the stress off of taking attendance as it soon became evident who was missing as well as helped students build a rapport with their peers. Different squads were sometimes picked to help set up and take down. This was also an efficient way to choose different students in helping out with the daily tasks. Implementing bell work daily in CALM helped students to prepare for that class as well as do some formative assessment. The daily bell work was a question or statement about the previous lesson and to check for their understanding. Students came into class got out a piece of paper and pencil and were prepared to start as soon as the second bell rang. It was a great classroom management tool in which it got the students on task ready to begin. It also alleviated questions on what are we doing today and wasting the first few minutes of class trying to get settled. It was also a useful assessment tool in which students were held responsible for their weekly participation mark. Handing in their bell work at the end of every week was a contributor to their overall participation grade in the course.
