Honoring the First Lady of Little Rock

Greensboro, N.C. (February 4, 2013) - - NCA&T along with the Alumni Association, Incorporated is proud to announce that we have been privileged to have the notable Daisy Lee Bates here on our campus. This will be Bates very first time visiting our campus and for that reason mostly everyone on campus is excited for her arrival. Every year here at A&T we have the honor of hosting great events with great intellects such as author Wes Moore, and our very own, A&T Four. Events with Mrs. Bates include, a 9 a.m. breakfast with staff and students, a question and answer forum with Bates, and a lunch social. I have been anticipating coming to this University for quite a while now. I am honored to finally get the chance and talk with all of the fellow aggies! Bates told us in an interview. Chancellor Martin stated, This is a big deal for not only the University, but for the community of Greensboro as well. Mrs. Daisy Bates is a well-known civil rights activist, publisher, and writer who played the lead role in the Little Rock Integration Crisis of 1957. The Little Rock Nine were a group of African American students who enrolled in Little Rock Central High School on 1957. Once attempting to enter the school, the group of nine was prevented from entering the segregated school. With intervention, the students were allowed to enter, and this event was known as one of the most important events during the Civil Rights Movement.

These events are free and open to the public. For more information call 980-229-9061 ###
No Steps Backwards is the motto adopted by the seven young men who were the first graduating class of the A&M College for the College Race, the first name given to what is now North Carolina A & T State University. The first alumni of the A&M College for the Colored Race knew that they were leading us into a meaning and responsible future. As our first alumni, they charted the course for our Alumni Association. The late Dr. B.W. Barnes is credited with organizing the first alumni chapter in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1909, the first year after he graduated from the College. With the addition of a graduate program in 1939 and new degrees, the number of alumni began to increase substantially. This growth in the alumni population was the impetus for new chapters and, eventually, the establishment of Regions. Today, with over 30,000 alumni of record, almost 50 chapters and strong support, the Alumni Association is poised to move to higher heights of accomplishment, affording its members the opportunity to engage in meaningful ways with other alumni and the University. We carry forward our original motto of No Steps Backwards into this new century and we honor our first alumni by being in the forefront of s upport for North Carolina A & T State University.
