Genre #2 Poem My Journey Home by Rachel West I woke up one day to realize that I have a lot to offer the world. No matter what my past held, I am worth more than I think. Even though Ive made mistakes, I can learn and come out stronger from them. Even though people have betrayed me, My identity and confidence is not in them. Even though I pretend to be strong, I still need help facing my fears. I need trust, love, and support. There are some things I cant do on my own. That is when I realized that it is okay to seek help. It is okay to find someone to talk to. It is okay to face my past so I can walk boldly into my future. That is when my journey home began.

Rationale Chart In the simplest words, the thesis of my inquiry project thesis was that the past does have an influence on your future, specifically in using past memories to formulate projections about future situations. The solution that I focused on in my Multigenre Project was to encourage students at UNC Charlotte to seek help from the Counseling Center to come to terms with their past to heal and become a better person for the future. Genre #1 Mini-Poster The first genre that I chose to use was a mini-poster. I chose this genre because it was a creative way to promote my solution. Unlike written genres, it is aided by visuals. Unlike the memes, the illustration is unique and original. In you combining these positive qualities together, I aimed to create a thoughtprovoking and creative product. Like the memes, my audience for this mini-poster is students at UNC Charlotte, particularly students who struggle with negative emotions connected to negative events in their past. The message is conveyed through this genre by both illustrations and words. The illustration presents the healing process that ones heart goes through in counseling. First, your heart is worn and full of negative emotions. Facing traumatic events in your past can be painful, as shown by the broken heart and plea for help. But when you talk with a trusted individual about these events and emotions, you can learn many life lessons, learn more about yourself, and grow stronger as an individual, as seen by the whole, healthy heart full of positive statements. Similarly, the solution to my problem is expressed by showing the positive effects that counseling can have on an individual and his/her life and heart. One assumption that I made in this genre was that, hopefully, each of the sentiments in the hearts would relate to as many individuals in the audience as possible. This is especially true for the first heart even though there are Genre #2 Poem I chose to write a poem for my second genre because poetry is a great way to creatively express all of the thoughts that you have. Visuals are great, but words allow you to say everything that you want to say, not just focus on certain points. Concerning the audience, whom I will discuss in part B, some people prefer written words to visuals because they better connect with the message through this particular genre. The audience is individuals who are struggling with events from their past that continue to haunt them in the present and in their thoughts of the future. This audience includes people who are considering counseling as an outlet for talking about these struggles. The audience is conveyed through this poem by written word, especially describing the freeing feelings and emotions associated with talking with a trusted person (including a counselor) about past events that have troubled you. The solution to my problem is expressed in this genre by encouraging individuals to seek counseling and talk to a trusted individual about their past or about their present struggles. I specifically do this by describing the freedom one feels when he/she finally decides to take action and find someone to talk through these issues with them. One power inequality that exists in this genre is the audiences ability to interpret this poem in their own ways, which may be different from my original intentions. For

several negative emotions and events listed, not everyone will be able to relate to the more specific ones because everyones background is difference. Therefore, the audience must imagine their own emotions and past events within the heart in order to maximize their connection with the message.

example, one reader may interpret the line That is when my journey home began literally if they are facing a personal crisis within their family. If they do not have a positive relationship with a relative, they may interpret this poem as encouragement to talk about their issues concerning the relative with that individual, therefore mending the relationship. An assumption that I made for this genre is that everyone in the intended audience is literate. There are some people who cannot read, who will therefore not be able to fully understand the material presented because of their illiteracy, giving those who can read more power because we can understand the material provided, while they probably wont be able to.

Genre #3 Meme Campaign I chose memes for the third and final genre because they are very popular among young people today, and my audience is students at UNC Charlotte, particularly ones who would benefit from counseling. Memes always grab attention among young people today because of their widespread popularity and humor. I wanted to use a genre that would interest people so that they would want to read it. In each meme, the message is conveyed by adding captions to popular images that are humorous. The solution to the problem I chose is expressed in the memes either by describing characters who decide to go to the Counseling Center or encouraging individuals to go to the Counseling Center. An assumption that is inherent within this genre is that the audience will understand most, if not all, of the memes presented. If they see a meme that they are not familiar with, they will not fully appreciate the humor or (more importantly) the message as much as they would if they were more familiar with that meme. This takes away from their power because they lack the understanding to take what they learn from this genre and act out the

solution presented going to the Counseling Center.
