Fly-Swattin Fractions!

Required Materials

Procedures

In this activity, students will complete a review activity to prepare them for the game they will play. This activity involves the multiplication and reduction of fractions. Students will complete a review sheet and then use their knowledge to play the Flyswatter Game. After completing this activity, students will be able to multiply fractions with a denominator less than or equal to ten with 100% accuracy. After completing this activity, students will have a better understanding of the multiplication tables and will be able to multiply whole numbers up to ten with 100% accuracy. MA.5.2.1 2000 Solve problems involving multiplication and division of any whole numbers. MA.5.2.3 2000 Use models to show an understanding of multiplication and division of fractions. MA.5.2.4 2000 Multiply and divide fractions to solve problems. Two fly-swatters Dry-erase board(s) Dry-erase markers Pencils Scratch paper Review sheet Prizes (such as small toys or candy) 1. Before students arrive, create the grid of answers on the dry erase board for the Fly-Swatter portion of the activity. 2. Pass out the review sheet and work through both of the example problems (located at the top of the review) together. 3. After making sure each student understands how to multiply and reduce fractions, tell each student to continue working through the remaining problems on the sheet. This should take no more than five minutes. 4. Go through the answers together by going in a circle, having each student say their answer for a problem. This will ensure that every student participated in this aspect of the activity. 5. Explain to each student the rules of the Fly-Swatter game (can be found following the lesson plan). If necessary, have two of the instructors play through two problems as an example. 6. Put students into pairs in order to play the game. Have the students that arent currently playing follow along with the pair thats playing on their own paper. 7. Allow each pair to play through four rounds, or as many as

time allows. 8. Switch pairs, and then repeat the game with the new pair, using different problems. 9. Once all pairs have had a chance to play, give each student a small prize, if you choose to do so. You may also follow up this activity with an assessment as follows. Create a quiz with problems similar to the ones used in this activity. Give to the students any time ranging from a day to a week after the completion of this activity. Have each student complete the quiz completely by themselves. You may decide to time the quiz or not.
