MGED 3015 Academic Language Lesson Commentary Elle Cornett Describe the lesson What grade/content: 7th Grade

ade Visual Arts Purpose of the lesson: To practice and gain a better understanding of the elements and principles of art Which standards/objectives inform this lesson: VA7PR.1 Understands and applies media, techniques, and processes with care and craftsmanship. Objective: Students will be able to follow instructions to accurately use line, form, shape (geometric and organic), symmetry, pattern, texture, movement, color, and value to create an abstract art piece in their table group before the end of class. Explain how this lesson helps your students make connections Connect to self: the students connect to self by having creative freedom to pick their own colors and representations of the elements and principles of art when it comes their turn to draw Connect to content o This content: This activity helped the students apply the content to making physical art, giving them a better understanding. o Other content (interdisciplinary): in some of the descriptions of different shapes, I used science terms, such as amoeba, to give students a point of reference to what they should draw. Connect to world: it helped them connect socially to those around them, and to the world as a whole, since the elements and principles of art are wholly accepted in the education community. Describe what you know about the students and the learning challenges associated with this class (keep in mind the contextual factors) Explain the variety of needs in this class: in this class, there are 7-8 ESOL/ELL students, but they all kept up with the lesson very well. Describe the students prior learning (related to this lesson) as determined by your pre-assessment Explain how your pre-assessment informed your choice of content vocabulary: due to the structure of the lesson, this was not a factor. Explain how your pre-assessment informed you choice of strategies: I questioned the students to see how much they already knew about the terms we would be using. When we came across a

term the students were not as familiar with, I made sure to explain it again and have other students explain it also when I mentioned it in an instruction. Explain how you helped students learn vocabulary: I repeated terms multiple times, I questioned students, and I had them explain the terms to their peers. Identify one example of Academic Language that you taught in this lesson Describe a key learning task from your lesson plan that introduced this word (task-related): I asked the students to turn one of their geometric shapes into a form, which helped them learn the difference between the two, and it helped them realize that one is two-dimensional, while the other is three-dimensional Describe a key learning task from your lesson plan that allowed our student to practice this AL related task: the student had to physically turn one of their geometric shapes into a form by adding lines and value. Explain how you helped students learn syntax OR discourse: since this is visual arts, its more about performance than conversation. But this activity did help them perform the motion of turning a geometric shape into a form Describe the students learning (related to this lesson) as determined by your post assessment Explain how your post-assessment provides direct evidence of learning: Before the lesson, students were answering my questions about the academic language in a mediocre manner. Judging by their work samples in the post-assessment, each of the students gained a better understanding, because they displayed the elements and principles of art in a clear, consistent manner. Explain how your post-assessment will impact your future teaching in this classroom (pretend): if I were to teach this class again, I would follow up with the students who didnt make as much progress from the pre-assessment questions to their finished abstract art piece. I would make sure they had all their questions answered before moving on. However, since the vast majority of the class improved, it would be more of an individual case.
