ASSIGNMENT 2 All the assumptions must be clearly stated 1. 30 m3/min of air at 35oC is passed in cross flow over the tubes of a chiller which consists of 8 tube rows in the airflow direction. There are 10 tubes per row and the tube wall temperature is kept at a constant temperature of 5oC. The outside diameter of the tubes is 2.5 cm with a 0.5 m tube length (Sn = Sp = 5 cm). Consider an in-line arrangement; a student is assigned to calculate the heat transfer rate for this chiller. In doing so, the student assumed that the outlet air temperature will be 27oC. Is this assumption valid? What is the heat transfer rate for this chiller?

A light motor oil with the characteristics given below and in Table 1 is to be heated from 150 to 250 F in a in. Schedule 40 pipe 15 ft long. The pipe wall is at 350 F. How much oil can be heated in this pipe, in pound per hour? What coefficient can be expected? The properties of the oil are as follow: The thermal conductivity is 0.082 Btu/fthF, the specific heat is 0.48 Btu/IbF. Table 1. Air at 1 atm pressure is passed through a horizontal 2-in. schedule 40 steam-jacketed steel pipe at a velocity of 1.5 ft/s and an inlet temperature of 68 F. The pipe wall temperature is 220 F. If the outlet air temperature is to be 188 F, how long must the heated section be?

Benzene is boiling at atmosphere pressure in a kettle-type boiler with horizontal tubes. Referring to the physical properties of benzene in Table 2; a) Estimate the maximum heat flux for a single tube b) Predict the maximum flux for pressures of 0.2 and 5 atm.
