ASSURE Lesson Plan Mary Gibbons The Industrial Revolution Social Studies, Technology, Language Arts 3 Social Studies: 3. Local communities change over time. Language Arts: 9. Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic.

Technology 1. Creativity and Innovation Standard(s): Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. b. create original works as a means of personal expression. Time Required: 4 one hour class periods, 1 three hour class period, with a break (recess/lunch) 27 students at 3rd grade level One student with severe ADHD One student with English as a Second language (ESL) One slow reader (academically challenged) Given step by step in class instructions, students will compile information from two different sources and apply them to a project in the form of a newsletter. They will collaborate together in finishing the newsletters, but it will be an individual project so that I can successfully determine how articulate they are in the subject matter and technological standards. Once they read the materials in class, they should be able to successfully produce a viable newsletter that meets the standards at an average level. I will work individually with the student with ESL and the slow reader to make sure they comprehend the materials.

Teacher Preparation Provide reading assignments. Demonstrate and work with word processing. Make sure computer lab is signed out for my class on Day 5. Print out example newsletters from past classes. Utilize media and materials (Procedures) Print out brainstorming sheets.

Lesson Procedures Day 1: Introduce project. Read aloud from Textbook A; in class discussion. Encourage students to take notes. Day 2: Read silently from Textbook B, and work with two

students individually with reading issues. Start passing out sample projects, an discuss different ideas and questions students have. Go over instructions on the newsletters briefly. Day 3: Discuss reading from Textbook B. Open class discussion about both readings. Go over instructions for newsletter thoroughly. Day 4: Encourage students to brainstorm on brainstorming sheets. Day 5: PROJECT DAY Have students in computer lab. Open word processor along with students and work with them to create newsletters. Demonstrate any questions that they have. When they are done, have them print out newsletters and collect/correct them. Practice and learn how to use different features of word processing. Read aloud (popcorn read) Require learner participation Required student participation in open discussions (pass around the talking stick.) Students work together and with teacher to create their own newsletters. Students Content: Student Knowledge of Social Studies: Newsletter shows proficient knowledge of Industrial Revolution. Student Knowledge of Language Arts: Students learn paragraph structure and how to use creativity. 21st century skills: Students develop research and collaborationskills to use throughout education and life.

Technology skills: Students learn more about word processor. and computer usage. Instruction: Revise how this project will be implemented next year and determine if this is a good course of action. For this you could see if the lesson could be used with another type of technology too since it is always changing. Great work here Mary!
