Salisha Shears SPEDE 777 TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM DESCRIPTION OF TOOL/APP I used the Counting Bear Application on an I-pad

to teach a math lesson on the relationship between numbers and quantities to a small group of ELL learners in a kindergarten ICT class. The I-pad is a touch screen tablet computer designed and marketed by Apple. Counting Bear is an educational game made by grasshopperapps.com (the makers of educational apps). Counting Bear is an educational game that helps children learn how to count by sight, sound, and touch. Some of the features of the application include: Learning how to count from 1 to 20 Learning how to recognize numbers by counting objects Learning how to count by touch - each time an item is counted the child will hear the number The app. can be personalize to add your own voice The app can be personalize to add your own items (ex. take pictures of the childs favorite items to make the game more fun and personal) The app uses real photographs instead of cartoon illustrations It is a multi-sensory learning tool which combines audio, voice, and written words

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTION ON HOW TO USE THE TOOL 1- Download Counting Bear Application in the Application Store for 99 cents. 2- Once the app is downloaded, select the Counting Bear Application, select play and touch the screen to begin 3- Follow step by step directions as prompted by voice commands

HOW TOOL WAS USED IN LESSON PLAN/ACTIVITY Math is often thought of as dry and boring subject, however, it is an important skill to master. The Counting Bear application is a fun way to encourage children to get excited about learning math, its a great way to stimulate the brain. I began my lesson by showing students number cards and had them count from 1-5. I then mixed up the numbers and asked students to identify the numbers to assess whether or not they would be able to identify the numbers if they were out of order. I then introduced dump truck counting mats (see table 1) where I placed a number card in the middle of the truck, students were then instructed to fill the truck with the amount of blocks that corresponded with the number. This helped students practice counting, one to one correspondence, and establish relationships between numbers and quantities.

TABLE 1

To keep students engaged, the I-pad was introduced to the lesson (see table 2). Students were familiar with the I-pad, as it is used during their literacy blocks where they listen to stories, and play educational games. They have also used the Counting Bear app, in the past, however, it was used during the lesson with a twist. I gave each student a leaflet with 5 boxes numbered 1 5. I showed students a display of items on the Counting Bear App (in sequential order ex. 1 goat, 2 flowers, 3 dolls), they were then asked to count the objects together, once complete, they were each asked to find the number on their leaflet that corresponded with the number of items counted, they then had to draw the items (ex. if they counted 1 goat, they had to identify the number 1 on their leaflet and

then draw 1 goat in that box). This continued for numbers 1 5. After the lesson, each student had the opportunity to use an I-pad to practice on their own. TABLE 2

ANALYSIS OF THE TOOL Overall, use of the application went well. For future activities, I would like to adjust the settings so the app would display numbers out of sequence to assess if students would be able to identify the numbers out of order, and would know to count the objects in order to figure out what the answer is. Early Childhood Special Education Lesson Plan Teacher Candidate: Salisha Shears Grade Level: Kindergarten Lesson: RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NUMBERS AND QUANTITIES Unit of Study: Math Goal of Lesson (Common Core State Standards/Division of Early Childhood where appropriate) Teach Count to Tell the Number of Objects K.CC.4 - Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities: connect counting to cardinality. K.CC.5 - Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 120, count out that many objects. Objectives: Students will be able to count and identify numbers 1 5 Students will be able to identify the quantities that associate with corresponding number Pre-Assessment: Beginning of lesson Count with students to assess how far they can count Post-Assessment: Students will be able to understand the relationship between numbers and quantities by engaging in counting activities and answering how many questions? Materials: Dump truck counting mat, counting cubes, number cards 1-5, I-pad, pencil, paper Use of Technology: I-pad & counting bear app Differentiation: Please see below attachment Seating Configuration/Use of Physical Space: Small group of three children Teaching roles and collaboration: NA Classroom Management: Students will be prompted and re-directed as needed

Engagement of students/anticipatory set/Motivation: Students will be encouraged to ask and answer questions. Connection to Previous lesson/Prior Knowledge: Students will be asked to count different items Lesson Presentation: Estimated Time: Approx. 10 min Explain importance of numbers in everyday life. Explain how students use numbers in school every day. Show students number cards and have them count from 1 -5 Mix numbers up and have students identify numbers Have students use counting mats to practice one to one correspondence Place number card 1 on counting card, have students count out and place the correct quantity of blocks in the truck (repeat for numbers 1-5) Teacher will model how to use counting bear app on I-pad. Students will learn how to recognize numbers by counting objects on the I-pad Guided Practice/Active Involvement/Small group work/Independent Practice: Estimated Time: Approx. 10 min Students will continue to learn how to recognize numbers by counting objects on the I-pad, and drawing the object on their work sheet that matches the corresponding number. Final Summary/Closure: Estimated Time : 5 min Have student count 1-5 Show students random numbers and ask them what it is Extension: Students will be able to use I-pad independently to use Counting Bear Application

Scaffolding and Differentiation Add or revise visual scaffolding during the lesson, such as charts, pictures or Mohamed, Jaychaleen To increase opportunities to hear/see and use vocabulary and to give multiple opportunities to experience the events

graphic organizers. Teacher props- huge question hand Kinesthetic movements/ actions to describe what is happening in the story Verbal/kinesthetic focusing prompts (do this, snapping, I like the way...)
