The overarching purpose of this lesson is(The big picture) a. To teach to students to make connections from the literature they are reading to the world around them. Essentially I want them to be able to connect characters and or events in the text to world, to them selves, and other texts. 2. The essential learning goal for today is? a. To teach students to connect a text to themselves, to other texts, and the world. 3. The Common Core State Standards that are covered in this lesson are: a. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. i. They will be citing textual evidence when they are making connections to the text, to the world, and to themselves. 4. The process by which I will equip my students to demonstrate the essential goal for today is: a. First I will begin by explaining how texts can relate to other things and hand out the worksheet I will use to evaluate if they have grasped the concept. I will teach them that texts can be related to many things and go in to detail about those ideas. b. In what sequence might this happen i. 2 minutes: Introduce lesson and handout worksheets ii. 5 minutes: Ask students questions about ways they think they can connect text to different things iii. 5 minutes: Explain how texts relate to other things and how to make those connections iv. 3 minutes: take time for questions about lesson/assignment v. work on assignment in free time after class work is finished or as homework that evening. c. Transitions and time management i. I will follow the sequence of events, this is a rather simple lesson and should flow pretty easily with out too many adjustments that I would have to make during the lesson according to student comprehension. ii. I will use transitional words and phrases like, now lets shift gears to this or Next we can talk about this. d. List the questions I may ask i. In ways can one connect a text to other things? ii. How do you usually make connections? iii. How does making connections enhance understanding of a text? e. Other considerations

i. Even though I assume that this will be a fairly easy concept it may be more difficult for my students and I need to be ready and willing to adjust to their needs. 5. The technology I am going to use is: a. I will be using a power point to outline what I explain to students and some of my questions and ways to connect literature. 6. The following evidence with show that my students demonstrated an understanding for the essential goal for today. a. I am giving them a worksheet and if they can give good examples and answer them accordingly I will know that they have understood my lesson 7. I will pay close attention to the following students today because.. a. The ELL students because sometimes they can get so caught up in words that they dont necessarily comprehend what they are reading enough to make connections. I will also pay attentions to the students struggle in class and make sure I am watching their body language to see how well they are grasping concepts.
