Goals
To tell an engaging story. The world of Nephilim is vast and expansive, with quite a lot of potential for exciting stories. putting the myriad plot threads into video game form is the game's top priority. To further explore the potential of real-time RPGs. RPGs tend to come in a few different varieties: JRPGs, which have an overworld and turnbased battles, and action-RPGs that are essentially action-adventure games with RPG elements. Real-time RPGs, which have overworlds and battles conducted in real time, are something seldom seen, and it would be quite interesting to see what sort of things can be done with the genre.

Single-player multiplayer adventure. With one player controlling the

story-based overworld action, multiple players controlling the other party members during frentic real-time action battles, and unoccupied party members easily switched over to A.I. control, Nephilim provides a fun and extremely flexible multiplayer experience.

Gameplay
The Basics
Like most RPGs, the player traverses an overworld on foot, exploring and investigating various towns, cities, and ruins, solving puzzles and uncovering information about the world along the way. In dangerous areas, you randomly encounter enemies and are sent to a battle screen. In this mode, rather than being turn-based, your characters and enemies move and attack in real time, independent of one another. In a one-player game, the player naturally controls only one member of the party with the rest being A.I. controlled, but other human players are free to take control of the other party members at any time. Winning battles gives you experience points, and with enough experience, your characters level up and get stronger.

No Weapons? No problem!
Unlike other RPGs, character advancement doesnt come in the form of buying or finding stronger weapons to equip. Instead, character advancement comes in the form of Mutations and Skills. Each character starts with a standard set of mutations, and if you use certain skills enough, you'll unlock more mutations and skills. Equipping a mutation not only alters your stats, but also changes the way that skills function. Each mutation grows in power as you level up, and no mutation is a direct upgrade to another, so none of them become truly obsolete. What mutations and skills can be gained depend on what type of Nephilim the character is: Nephilim type 0 - Human: Can't gain or use angel and demon mutations and skills, but can gain and use neutral skills. Nephilim type 1 - Half: Can gain and use neutral skills and either angel mutations and skills, or demon mutations and skills. Nephilim type 2 - Whole: Can gain and use neutral skills as well as Angel and Demon mutations and skills. Nephilim type 3 - Silver: In addition to Level 2 capabilities, Silver Nephilim can access a unique silver form, granting them enormous power and special Nephilim skills.

Player Characters
Janus
Backstory For as long as he can remember, Janus had lived on the streets of Arcadia with no memory of his family. When he was around 14, he awakened to his powers as a Nephilim and was nearly killed by an angelic Nephilim-hunter. Thankfully he was saved by fellow Nephilim, and eventually resolved to form a resistance to fight back against the angels. He hasnt had a lot of success. Physical Description Janus is about 20 years old, 6 tall, and has grayish hair and similarly pale skin. Hes rather thin and lanky, with very little apparent muscle. He uses his Nephilim mutations by transforming his arms. Mental/Social Attributes While he's honest and forthright at heart, the sheer difficulty of trying to fight back against the angels has left him rather jaded. He's desperate not to let any more of his allies be killed, and thus tends to be overly careful. Combat Style Janus' combat style tends to be quite brutal and unrefined, exclusively using his transformed arms. His right arm performs heavy attacks, and his left arm performs speed attacks. He's more likely to try and block an attack rather than dodge it.

Nat Taylor
Backstory Nat was once a cheerful young girl living in the Usonia Sector. However, her world was shattered when she witnessed the murder of her brother in a bout of gang violence. She eventually taught herself to fight, and by adulthood she made it her mission to hunt down every gang in her hometown of Angel City. After a chance encounter with Janus, and realizing that the gang activity might be the work of wrath demons, Nat decides to accompany Janus to see just how much influence angels and demons have over the populace.

Physical Description

Author: Alex Perez

Nat is around 19-20 years old, 510, with long dark hair which is often drawn back into a ponytail. She has a wiry athletic physique, comparable to a runner. Its important to note that, when the story starts, she is completely human.

Mental/Social Attributes Nat is quite snarky, able to spit in the face of even the most dire situations. Shes overall a pretty level-headed and reasonable person, but is utterly incensed by bullying, and will fiercely punish such behavior. Shes also completely (and some would say eerily) fearless, sometimes to her detriment. Combat Style: Nat uses a self-taught style of martial arts that incorporates moves from all sorts of other fighting styles. In particular, shes become extremely adept at attacking opponents right after dodging their attacks.

The Gemini Twins

Backstory A pair of identical twin Nephilim, they're Janus' oldest friends, having met just after he awakened. They were separated from their mother at a young age and had to fend for themselves for a number of years, but managed to be reunited with her soon after they met Janus. The twins' minds are linked, and as such they move, act, and speak in unison, and each can see and hear what the other sees. They have individual names, but prefer to be called Gemini. Physical Description Being identical, both twins are in their mid-teens, 5' 5'' tall, and have ebony hair and a slender build. Their one difference is that one twin has black eyes and the other has white eyes, reflecting their different Nephilim abilities. Mental/Social Attributes The twins tend to be rather emotionless and taciturn, and speak extremely politely with a lack of contractions. Due to these factors, they often seem to be rather hard to approach. They do have emotions, but simply choose to suppress them most of the time to keep their own mind link clear. Combat Style In stark contrast to their usual identical nature, the twins adopt very different combat styles. They transform their entire bodies, with the white-eyed twin favoring speed abilities and the black-eyed twin using power attacks. Utilizing their mind link, they still tend to attack in tandem.

Non-Player Characters
Friends
Lady Amaterasu
Mother of the Gemini twins, Amaterasu is a powerful Silver Nephilim who is revered as a sun goddess in old Yamato. Shes able to create silver flames that can burn targets to nothing. She taught Janus how to control his Nephilim powers, and is something of a surrogate mother to him.

Charon
An extremely enigmatic Nephilim, Charon is often posted as a spy in hell, traversing its rivers in a small rowboat. He occasionally leaves his post to offer support and advice. He seems to be extremely old, and likely knows much more about the world than he lets on.

Antagonists
Angels and Demons
The angels and demons are the last survivors from among a multitude of factions that used to exist. Both factions contain seven different sub-races, based on the seven sins and virtues:

Angels
Seraphim, Raphaelites, Urielites Humility, Kindness, and Temperance. These three are largely the same race. Theyre human-like in form, with large wings and wearing white cloaks. Seraphim specialize in combat, Raphaelites are healers, and Urielites are experts in stealth and espionage. Behemoths Diligence Gigantic creatures resembling a mix of bulls and gorillas, they are heavens muscle, and take great pride in all forms of manual labor, building great structures and transporting supplies. Genies Generosity Heavens craftsmen, theyre spirits of air and water that are extremely adept at creating all manner of small-scale items, especially if youre in need of it. Valkyries Justice There are no better warriors in heaven than the valkyries. Wearing shining armor and riding winged horses, seeing them charge at you is as awe-inspiring as it is terrifying.

Cherubs Love Skilled negotiators, the Cherubs are excellent at settling disputes. In battle, their arrows do not physically harm their opponents, but instead reduce their will to fight.

Raphael
One of the leaders of heaven and the founder of the Raphaelites, he was once extremely kind, but his battles with the Nephilim have hardened his heart. He bears a strong hatred for Nephilim, and wishes for nothing less than their total destruction. As su ch, hes been placed in charge of hunting them down.

Nathaniel
A seraphim Lieutenant, Nathaniel is younger and much more reasonable than some of his commanders. Hes part of a Nephilim-hunting squad, but always tries to give his opponents a fighting chance. This has earned him a bit of criticism from peers and superiors alike, but since hes completed every mission given to him without fail, no one has bothered to curb this behavior.

Demons
Devils Pride Otherwise normal demons that have been granted incredible power by Lucifer, they are the ruling class of hell. Naga Envy Serpent-like demons that specialize in magic and hate all non-aquatic life, they live in Green-Eye Lake, hells largest body of water. Hellswarm Gluttony Insectoid demons that can split apart into a swarm of smaller insects and reform at will, they are voracious eaters whose power is directly proportionate to how much they consume. Beleph Sloth Enormous beings that look like pigs, bears, and sloths all in one, they spend most of their life sleeping. Awaken them prematurely, and their rage is absolutely unfathomable. Efreet Greed Flame spirits, the Efreet can craft just about anything you could ever want for a price. Amonians Wrath Vaguely wolf-like humanoids, Amonians are extremely brutal and powerful warriors, divided into several war clans. They bow only to strength, and nothing else.

Asmodeans Lust Masters of seduction, Succubi and Incubi are experts at charming and enslaving lesser beings.

Lucifer
Lucifer was originally an angel until he was thrown out of heaven for experimenting with demon blood, experiments which contributed to the creation of the Nephilim. He eventually made his way to hell and became its ruler. He still bears angelic powers, but theyre twisted and corrupted.

XevelZebub
A Hellswarm mercenary, hes found quite a lot of work tracking down Nephilim within the walls of Arcadia. Hes absolutely ruthless, but is actually rather jovial when he works, often wearing very nice suits and engaging in mid-fight banter. He has no compunctions about abandoning a job if he doesnt think the risk is worth the reward.

Story
Background for the Story
A long time ago, a bizarre energy cloaked the earth, causing every single human to mutate into powerful, godlike beings. Forming various factions and allegiances, they were compelled to wage war on one another over many thousands of years, making the earth unrecognizable in the process. Eventually, only two factions remained: Angels and Demons. Realizing that their numbers were dwindling and that their battles would most likely result in their mutual extinction, the two sides called a truce, and conducted a series of experiments to attempt to recreate the original human race and replenish their numbers. However, this resulted in the birth of a third faction: The Nephilim, powerful creatures that bore the powers of both angels and demons. Shocked at this failure, and quickly realizing that the Nephilim could become stronger than either of the two factions, the angels and demons attempted to destroy the Nephilim, but they eluded their parent races and went into hiding. Eventually the Angels and Demons succeeded in recreating humans, and created the human territory known as the Unified Sectors of Arcadia. However, none of Arcadias residents have any idea of these events that preceded the creation of their country, and new Nephilim have inexplicably started appearing among its populace. Hunted by angels and demons for reasons unknown to them, the nephilim try to eke out some sort of existence, and hope to solve the mystery of this world.

Locations
Most of the world is still recovering from being devastated by war. As such, craters, battlefields, and ruins dot the landscape, some of which are being overtaken by returning plant life. The Unified Sectors of Arcadia: Located on the largest landmass, this is the territory occupied by humans. Its sectors each correspond to a different culture of original humans, based on the fragmented history that the angels and demons were able to piece together (for example, the Yamato Sector resembles Japan; the Albion sector resembles the U.K.; Usonia resembles the United States, etc). It resembles modern-day, real-world earth in most respects. Its surrounded by a barrier that gives the illusion of an endless sea and sky, and thus the inhabitants believe that Arcadia is the entire world. Heaven: The capitol of the angel empire, heaven itself is a series of islands floating high in the sky, surrounded by clouds and sunlight. Enormous temples dot the landscape, as well as lush plantlife and fantastic fauna. Hell: Built on completely barren land, Hell is shrouded in eternal night. Most of hell consists of wasteland known as Erebus, but the very center is a molten caldera known as The Pit. Five rivers crisscross the landscape, flowing to and from the enormous Green-Eye Lake. Horrific monsters roam most of hell, and the landscape is dotted with dead trees.

Experience
All in all, Nephilim should be both a fun game and an engaging story, with equal importance placed upon both combat and learning about the world.
