Alternately,althoughspeakingonlyEnglish,Tanischallengedtobalancetwodifferentversionsof thelanguage.InMotherTongueshedescribeshowshespeaksinbothproperandimproperforms. Language,food,andlabelsaresomeofthemajorfactorsamongthemanythatcontributetotheidentity ofaperson.Languageishowwecommunicatewitheachotherandcantellalotaboutuslikeour cultureandeducation.Foodcandisplayourethnicityandracewhilelabels,stereotypes,perception, andselfesteemcandictateourliveseitherpositivelyornegatively.Identityisimportantbecauseitgives uscharacterandindividuality.Lifewouldbeboringifallhumansweremerelyrobotsprogrammedto onlyeat,speak,andworkinthesameway.Variationiswhatmakeslifeenjoyableandinteresting.On theotherhand,withthissenseofindividuality,identitycangiveusafeelingofbelongingnessandlinkus togroupsofotherslikeus.Still,eveninthosegroups,eachmemberisdifferentlikeasnowflakesome maylookalike,buteachisuniqueinitsownway.
